The transescent child is in a state of metamorphosis in body, mind, emotions and value system. Because of these extreme changes, middle level students often experience feelings of inadequacy which result in poor school performance. The enhancement of self esteem through the development of an advisory program handbook is the goal of this project. This handbook will include units which promote student self concept and acceptance and in turn create an environment more conducive to student success and achievement.

The effectiveness of Project HOPE, an acronym for Helping Our People Educationally, was tested to determine if improved academic achievement would result from an after-school study hall. Intended for ninth grade students that fall behind because of uncompleted daily work and missed assignments, Project HOPE was created to give students "a last chance." It was thought that daily work scores would rise and that students would realize an overall increase in their final course grades. Children's literature can enliven and enrich a social studies program. The role of children's literature in content subjects, especially social studies on the elementary level was studied. The types of children's literature which can be used in social studies, namely informational books, biographies, historical fiction, were also studied. In addition bibliographies were consulted for repeated mention of the best selections. Based upon the findings cited above a selected annotated bibliography of selections of poetry and children's books was produced for use in a fifth grade study of the United States.

Most teachers would like to provide more help and individualized instruction for their students. The implementation of mastery learning in the classroom can help accomplish this. Use of the mastery learning technique may also reduce the high level of predictability in student achievement, All students should be able to experience some degree of success. The materials in this project are designed to allow students to progress at a pace they set for themselves, and to achieve mastery of all units covered.
