This project was developed to provide teachers with a handbook for the presentation of a set of four separate parent workshops. The purpose of the workshops was to instruct parents to work effectively with their child to improve reading. The handbook was intended: 1. The home language acquisition skills notebook was developed to aid parents in giving appropriate language stimulation and activities for their child's level of development, four to six years of age. In addition, positive home teaching techniques, positive home language hints, and a mini-language library bibliography are also available to guide the parent in appropriate home language intervention. Although the notebook will be used with language delayed children first, it is designed to be used with all children in the Lake Chelan Elementary Kindergarten in an attempt to stimulate better language skills, both receptive and expressive.

This project developed an educational program for parents of children in the lower economic classes. The program consisted of a series of workshops for parents to help them enrich the prereading background of their preschool and primary-grade children. The major emphasis was to acquaint parents with children's literature and with the importance of their role in the reading development of their children.
