This study has two important dimensions. Part I consists of a survey of the 1962-1963 curriculum offerings in speech and hearing therapy available to the student majoring in elementary education at eleven of the accredited institutions of higher learning in the State of Washington. Part II of the study deals with the organization of the local speech correction programs, the qualifications of the speech correctionists, and types of contact made by the correctionists with parents and classroom teachers during the 1962-1963 school year. Superintendents and personnel directors involved in hiring certified personnel turn to the teacher credential as a vital source of information. Currently, there is a great deal of difference in the information included in the credential depending upon which placement office prepared the document. Specifically, the purposes of this study are to: l. Identify the legal responsibilities of the junior high school principal. 2. Establish criteria for justifying the release of a principal from classroom teaching and the employment of administrative and clerical assistance. 3. Determine the ratio of administrators to the number of pupils enrolled in the three year junior high schools of the State of Washington with enrollments between 500 and 1,000. 4. Make necessary recommendations regarding the administrative staffing of Washington's junior high schools.
