Reading Study Groups As A Factor In College Persistence, Elizabeth A. Bennedsen

The relationship between attendance in a voluntary study group and persistence in college was studied at Tacoma Community College. A group of students entering with reading skills at the junior high school level was given the opportunity to participate in a study group focusing on study skill techniques and class content. At the end of eight months, the students who were involved with the study group had a higher level of persistence than students who did not choose to participate. It was the purpose of this study to compare the test scores of one group of children who took the verbal ability section of the sixth grade School and College Ability Test (SCAT) with the test scores of the same group of children on the eighth grade reading Sequential Test of Educational Progress (STEP) and to determine the degree of relationship between the tests.
