Teachers in Spanish immersion schools, schools that teach a majority of English only speakers or in a one-way immersion model, face unique challenges in meeting their students' language and learning needs. The goal of this study is to identify the curriculum and resources teachers in one-way immersion schools use in their classroom to meet these student needs. The basic design of the study includes individual interviews with questions focused on the curriculum and assessment teachers use, the pedagogical practices they implement and the advice they have for other immersion teachers in the field. Strengthening The Capacity To Serve Undocumented Students In A Rural California State University, Carlos Alvarado Sanchez Jan 2020

Strengthening The Capacity To Serve Undocumented Students In A Rural California State University, Carlos Alvarado Sanchez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Undocumented students face many obstacles while seeking a higher education degree. As undocumented students apply and are accepted to colleges and universities, they should have the means and resources to complete their higher education degree like all students. An array of strategies can be considered and implemented to have educators and school administrators in higher education be better equipped to serve all students, but specifically undocumented students.

Educators and administrators could continue their acquisition of knowledge base and comfortability about the different implications that surround undocumented students. Therefore, this thesis seeks to examine the efficacy of self-reports on a pre- …

Making Connections To The Filipino American Community Using Culturally Responsive Music Pedagogy, Jared Thomas Coyle

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Positive connections between school and home have been shown to increase student achievement. Currently there are few resources available in the United States that allow teachers to incorporate aspects of Filipino American culture into their instruction practices. Through the use of traditional children’s songs and singing games, the K-6 classroom music curriculum can serve as an effective vehicle to establish these connections.

In interviews with members of the California Filipino American community, we discussed the musical culture of the Philippines. Informants shared how musical traditions are transmitted and shared in the Philippines and United States. Participants also discussed possible ways …

A Review Of The Evidence Supporting Play-Based Learning For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Josh Wilson Jan 2020

A Review Of The Evidence Supporting Play-Based Learning For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Josh Wilson

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has become more prevalent through more diagnosis, with about 1 in 54 being diagnosed with ASD (Center for Disease Control, 2016). With more children being diagnosed with ASD, more services are needed. Adapted Physical Education (APE) is a direct service provided for children with disabilities, and APE teachers should use proven methods to effectively and efficiently assist these children in their area of need. Play-based learning has proven to help improve many social, communication, social skill engagement and play behaviors in children with ASD so play-based learning should be utilized more within the context of APE …

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This research study investigates how Chinese language teachers in California made the change from in-person learning to distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, how they set up and taught virtual classes and what their reactions were to the online transitions. Teachers utilized various interactive tools and strategies to teach students in their virtual classrooms. Parental involvement with the child’s education at home increased. Some public school district polices caused greater reductions in student participation than others. Teachers applied various communication strategies to engage students in creative ways while teaching online. This together with curriculum development and assessment design required that …

What Student Information Do Teachers Find Valuable Enough To Change Their Practices?, Heather Becksted

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This Teacher Survey study follows-up my school district’s Parent Interview conducted by teachers on children’s interests, parents’ hopes and fears for their children, how the school can communicate with parents, and areas the school can improve. The intent of the district’s Parent Interview was to improve teacher awareness of student and family needs, influence the teachers to scaffold their curriculum to support student needs and become more motivated to be involved with long-term initiatives that could improve student and family support within the district. However, the Parent Interview did not ask teachers about their views of what, if any, Parent …

Growth Mindset And Agency In The Preschool Classroom, Isaac Rowan Coppock Jan 2020

Growth Mindset And Agency In The Preschool Classroom, Isaac Rowan Coppock

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Mindsets, or how we as individuals characterize intelligence and our ability to attain it, are deeply connected to motivation. Those who employ a fixed mindset view intelligence as set and effort as fruitless. Conversely, those who utilize a growth mindset have healthy attitudes about challenges and view effort as a necessary part of learning. For educators working with children, finding ways to encourage growth over fixed mindsets is incredibly indicative of the future academic success individual children might experience. This study explores the foundations of mindset attainment through a teacher’s ability to affect individual preschool-aged (three to five years) children’s …

TRAUMA INFORMED PRACTICES AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL

Forrest Cord

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and childhood trauma have been found to affect almost two thirds of the American population, including students enrolled in our public schools. This project was designed to create and implement a professional development workshop that provided a clear and concise description of ACEs, how exposure to ACEs and trauma affects the development of the brain, and how this exposure can impact a student’s behavior in and outside the classroom. The second focus of the presentation discussed trauma-informed classroom strategies to mitigate these behaviors.

This project began …

Is Inclusion The Answer?, Jacqueline M. Hewins

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Inclusion is the method by which many school districts meet the requirement of educating students with disabilities in the “least restrictive environment”. While it is an established practice, supported by the educational community and most families alike, there is a gap in the literature regarding how students feel about being in inclusion classes. In order to learn more about the student experience, five students with special education needs from a rural high school were interviewed about their involvement in inclusion. Students were asked about whether they felt included, if they socialized with peers from the inclusion class, and if they …

Holistic Student Development In Higher Education: Perspectives And Practices Of Holistic Student Development At A Public California University, Francisca Ann Crutchfield

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Within traditional American public colleges and universities, there is an emphasis on academic student success within the structures and values of educational programs, and the lack of a holistic approach to higher education may be negatively impacting college student development and well-being. By balancing academic knowledge with other areas of knowledge, including a heightened sense of community and mental and emotional well-being, higher education can cultivate students who apply their skills with reduced stress, a sense of belonging, and freedom of expression. This qualitative phenomenological study seeks to identify characteristics, educational priorities, and programming approaches of university student service programs …
