Identifying Significant Components Of A Sexuality Education Program For Students With Severe Disabilities, Amanda Brennen

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The body of knowledge in the field of sex education that has been modified for individuals with disabilities is currently lacking. There are currently no evidence based practices for sexuality education. The programs that currently exist are either not effective for the severe population or there is no research to support its use. However, people that are considered in the population of severe special education could benefit greatly from a sexuality program that is evidence based.

The researcher conducted a study to determine the topics that are common in the literature and that are important to teachers and their with …

Preparing Today’S Middle School Science Students For The Real World Of Science Through Relevant And Inquiry-Based Activities, Hannah F. Walsh

Honors Program Theses and Projects

During the past several decades we have seen an increase in the demand for individuals trained in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines (Rothwell, 2013). While this is this case, according to the Bureau of Labor, the United States will see a shortage of STEM workers over the next decade, with the demand for highly trained STEM workers exceeding the minimal supply (Rothwell, 2013). In a study of bachelor and associate students in the academic year of 2003 and 2004, only 28% of bachelor students and 20% of associate students entered STEM fields (Chen & Soldner, 2013). This study …

The Effect Of Both Per Pupil And Science Expenditure On Fifth Grade Science Mcas Scores In Three School Districts In Massachusetts, Kaitlin Kummer

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In this research study, I focused on the correlation between per pupil expenditures of three school systems - a low funded suburban school, a moderately funded suburban school, and a well-funded urban school - and the scores students received on their fifth grade state standardized test for science (MCAS). These three school systems have different demographics, and varying levels of both state aid and average family income. As a result, each school system spends different amounts on their science programs and on each individual student’s education for the school year. Previous research has found that school size and per pupil …

A review of Animal-Assisted Therapy and related terms such as "Animal-Assisted Activities" is presented as an introduction to the exploration of additional equine applications with children. Animal-Assisted Therapy has been studied, but Animal-Assisted Activities with children facing normal developmental struggles has not received much attention. Definitions and research for various animal activities and therapies are reviewed. Subsequent focus will be on equines helping children via Animal-Assisted Activities to meet normal developmental challenges. Creating parallels using a horse is an avenue to working with children, aiding them in the process of introspection, self-monitoring, self-efficacy, self-esteem, metacognitions, and overcoming angst associated with …
