The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) program brings together two existing, long-established projects, ACER’s Youth in Transition and DEETYA’s Australian Youth Survey. The origins and extent of these two projects are described in the following pages. While contact with the AYS cohort is due to finish in 1997, it is hoped to continue to survey members of the Youth in Transtion 1975 birth cohort up to at least age 25. The Australian Youth Survey (AYS) is a major longitudinal survey of young Australians set up to provide policy-relevant information on young people's education and training pathways as well as their access to and success in the Australian labour market. The survey follows a nationally representative group of young people aged 16 to 19, with the initial cohort of approximately 5350 young people interviewed for the first time in 1989. The surveys focus on the education and labour market experiences of groups of young Australians, beginning from their middle years of secondary schooling. Data collected include basic demographic variables, as well as information about educational and labour force participation and experiences extending over a number of years. The present form of the LSAY program commenced in 1995 with a national sample of Year 9 students. The program also brings together earlier longitudinal studies conducted by ACER under the Youth in Transition (YIT) program, and by the Commonwealth under the Australian Longitudinal Survey (ALS) and Australian Youth Survey (AYS) programs.
