These two components can be used independently or together. When used together, the speech-language pathologist has a method for selecting goals and targets of varying levels of articulatory difficulty, plus a means for measuring changes in a child’s words, targeted and produced, …

Embracing Écriture Inclusive Students Respond To Gender Inclusivity In The French Language Classroom, Rebecca Lynn Garbe
Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
In 2017, the French Academy published a declaration opposing the official integration of écriture inclusive into the French language for fear that it would put it in “péril mortel.” Specifically, the Academy targeted a newly proposed punctuation, le point milieu, or the middot, that would allow those writing in French to express both the masculine and feminine endings of words with a dot between the two. This addition would disrupt traditional gendered interpretations within the language and make space, not only for the goals of French feminists, but also for visibility of non-binary French-speaking people. The Academy argued, however, …

The National Socialists And How They Ostracized An Entire Population, Kathryn Weber
Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies
In this paper, I analyze how the National Socialists ostracized the Jews before the start of World War II. I also discuss the importance of teaching students about this topic in US schools in a way that promotes historical inquiry, historical empathy, and critical thinking skills. There is an attached lesson plan that I did with 6th-grade students to provide an example of one way to teach students about the Holocaust. Here is my thesis for the paper:
"By examining laws passed by the Reichstag, the organization of the ghettos and the camps, the German education system, correspondence between …

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) individuals have specific healthcare needs, and often experience barriers in accessing quality and reliable health services. Research has revealed that medical practitioners are inadequately prepared to attend to the needs of the LGBT+ community. This paper will draw on the concept of intersectionality to discuss current medical school curriculum and its lack of LGBT+ education. This paper's focus is specifically on older LGBT+ adults, specifically the ways in which the intersection of gender, sexuality, race, and even class play a role in the different experiences of older LGBT+ adults in regard to the medical care, …

Conservatives In The Classroom: Targeted Or Apathetic?, Emma Nordmeyer
Sociology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
In the 21st Century U.S., college and university classrooms have become a hotbed of political debate. Conservative students decry "liberal indoctrination" in the liberal arts setting. In this paper, I analyze attitudes towards classes across the political spectrum. I found that while liberals have more positive views of class, conservatives have a wider range of attitudes. This study points to divisions within the right wing.

Augustana Seniors Fall 1885 (Class of 1886)
The series of papers “Augustana Seniors Fall 1885” represent the work of students in FYI 103 Practical Genealogy, taught by me in the spring term of the 2018–2019 academic year. The course is part of a three-term sequence of First Year Inquiry courses that all first-year students at Augustana take. The students in my class worked in small teams to investigate the family history and genealogy of an Augustana alum. The alums were taken from the members of the senior class as listed in the Augustana College catalog of 1885–1886. The resulting papers were part of the requirements of the …
