The main goal of this dissertation is to examine the presence of le machiavel in the seventeenth century tragedies of Jean Racine. It focuses on all of his tragedies and closely examines what characters have the traits of le machiavel. Furthermore, it examines how le machiavel influences the outcome of the tragedy at the end.

A Comparative Analysis Of Order And Disorder: Captivity’S Physical And Metaphysical Constructs In The Works Of Jean Racine, John Hallmark

This paper discusses a comparative analysis of order and disorder with respect to captivity in the works of French playwright Jean Racine. It is argued that a sense of physical captivity enables the characters to better separate the parts of their psyche and therefore, display a greater sense of order. However, when the characters are subject to metaphysical captivity, the ID takes over the mind and life becomes disordered. The role of space, language, and religion is also examined at length.
