Dissertations

Problem and Purpose

Students in fifth through eighth grades at Glenview Adventist Academy (GAA) presented difficulties in the subjects of spelling, vocabulary and reading comprehension. The school had not followed the previous 10-year trend of technology implementation in the classroom, in spite of conclusive research on its advantages. This study was conducted to determine to what extent teaching methodology and the use of technology could affect academic performance in the areas of spelling, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Research on the implementation of software and the use of tablets (iPad Minis) in the classroom has been scarce and contradictory in the …

Language, Literacy, Attentional Behaviors, And Instructional Quality Predictors Of Written Composition For First Graders, Young-Suk Kim, Stephanie Otaiba, Jessica Sidler, Luana Greulich Jan 2013

Language, Literacy, Attentional Behaviors, And Instructional Quality Predictors Of Written Composition For First Graders, Young-Suk Kim, Stephanie Otaiba, Jessica Sidler, Luana Greulich

Faculty Publications

We had two primary purposes in the present study: (1) to examine unique child-level predictors of written composition which included language skills, literacy skills (e.g., reading and spelling), and attentiveness and (2) to examine whether instructional quality (quality in responsiveness and individualization, and quality in spelling and writing instruction) is uniquely related to written composition for first-grade children (N = 527). Children's written composition was evaluated on substantive quality (ideas, organization, word choice, and sentence flow) and writing conventions (spelling, mechanics, and handwriting). Results revealed that for the substantive quality of writing, children's grammatical knowledge, reading comprehension, letter writing automaticity, …

Teacher Perceptions Of Their Effectiveness In Supporting Reading Strategies As A Result Of Collaboration With A Literacy Coach, Sharon S. Miller Jan 2008

Teacher Perceptions Of Their Effectiveness In Supporting Reading Strategies As A Result Of Collaboration With A Literacy Coach, Sharon S. Miller

Dissertations

Problem

The poor reading and comprehension skills of many secondary-school students present a challenge for secondary teachers, the majority of whom have no training in the teaching of reading. The increasing expectations of the No Child Left Behind legislature add to the pressures on public educators. Is coaching an effective way to support and encourage secondary content-area teachers to include reading strategies in their daily work with students?

Purpose

The purpose of the study was to examine the literacy coach initiative in two small junior-senior high schools. A further purpose was to closely study the coach and two of the …

A Study Of The Relation Of Rhythm Ability To Reading Achievement In A Sample Of Fifth-Grade Students, Margarete Moon Jan 1978

A Study Of The Relation Of Rhythm Ability To Reading Achievement In A Sample Of Fifth-Grade Students, Margarete Moon

Master's Theses

Problem

Recent research in the area of development of language skills indicates a trend toward exploration of the role of the auditory modality in learning to read. Rhythm is frequently thought to be an important contributing element. A correlational study was undertaken to discover the extent to which a relationship exists between rhythm ability and reading achievement in a sample of middle class fifth-grade children of both sexes.

Method

One hundred and thirty-seven fifth-grade students participated in the study. Of these, 63 were males and 74 were females. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were found between scores of rhythm ability and …

A Handbook Of Supplementary Reading Methods And Job Sheets For Childen With Learning Disabilities, May-Ellen Colon Jan 1975

A Handbook Of Supplementary Reading Methods And Job Sheets For Childen With Learning Disabilities, May-Ellen Colon

Master's Theses

Problem

An important concern of educators today is the prevalence of children with reading disabilities. There are many methods and materials with which to help these children. The problem is to coordinate some of these techniques and to find the best approach. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to combine the best from a number of methods into a new set of useable materials for learning disabled children.

Method

Several books and materials on teaching learning disabled children were read for background and information. Ideas obtained from the methods studied were then combined to form three different types of …

A Comparative Study Of The Vocabulary Of Five Basal Reading Series, Judith O. Young Jan 1974

A Comparative Study Of The Vocabulary Of Five Basal Reading Series, Judith O. Young

Master's Theses

Introduction

Much emphasis is being placed on the teaching of reading today, and yet students are still needing remedial help. The author's interest in the vocabulary comparability of basal reading textbooks began when trying to place a remedial student into a corresponding level in another basal series—there was no way to know if the vocabulary levels corresponded.

Through professional discussions with others it was found that many had faced this same problem with two types of students: l) Those transferring to a new school from a school system using another basal series; and, 2) Those needing additional remedial help. This …
