The Use Of Social Media For Academic Practice: A Review Of Literature, Retta Guy
Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice
Social media has become extremely popular among college students. It is estimated that several million students across the globe use these resources for personal interactions on a daily basis. As Web-based technologies are designed to support the social architecture of a community, educators and researchers are exploring the integration of social media in education. As scholars explore these new online communities, it is necessary to examine the use of social media tools by students of color, a segment of the population that has historically experienced inequalities associated with the use of and access to technology. The current literature review reports …

[Poster Presentation] Pre-service teachers at Boise State University enrolled in a piloted one-credit library research course, in which the POGIL method was used to teach information literacy and Web 2.0 skills. The faculty librarian employed the POGIL learning method in order to improve students’ depth of learning and increase their engagement with the information-seeking process. Learning outcomes included building pre-service teachers’ content knowledge; increasing familiarity with inquiry learning; recognizing and solving information problems using the Big6 Skills framework; evaluating primary and secondary sources; and utilizing state-funded information resources in their teaching. The overall goal of the course was two-fold: to …

Universities and colleges across the United States are making innovative strides in higher education programming to catalyze a more sustainable era of agriculture. This is clearly exemplified through the formation of community-university partnerships as critical illustrations of civic engagement (CE) for sustainable agriculture (SA) education. This paper explores the praxis of CE for SA education by focusing on the ways in which five land-grant universities (LGUs) with undergraduate programs in SA have developed and put into practice community-university partnerships. Drawing upon these programs and supportive literature, this article specifically attempts to describe the role and significance of CE for SA …

Education accountability measures, especially since the passage of No Child Left Behind, have been assessed for a variety of factors in empirical research. A large portion of this literature finds that overall, accountability measures increase performance, but also increase the achievement gap. These findings have inspired this research to examine what other marginal groups of students have been affected by the unintended reaction to the consequence-based incentives found in minimum competency accountability programs, such as No Child Left Behind.
In particular, this research looks at how the changes in a high school or school district’s Adequate Yearly Progress marks affect …

Male Farmers Coping With Loss Of Spouse: Impacts On Farming Operation And Family Life, Daniel O. Wilson
Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development
Losing a spouse is as devastating an experience anyone will ever deal with in his or her life. Research, however, shows that men have a harder and longer time coping with the loss of a spouse than women. When the widower’s profession is farming, there are no resources to specifically help that individual with their loss. The purpose of this research was to gain insight into the lives of widowed farmers with particular focus on transitions in their farming operation and their family life. Through their stories, we learn what is happening before the loss of the female spouse on …
