The purpose of this project was to provide teachers of fifth- and sixth-grade special education students with: 1. A career awareness unit on the fast food drive-in industry which includes specific lessons in the curriculum areas of reading, math, language arts, communication skills, health/science, social studies, and art. 2. A pre-postevaluation tool for measuring student's knowledge gained from the unit, student's self-concept, and student's attitude toward school.

A Syllabus For First Grade Teachers: Introducing Reading As A Functional Skill Through Food-Related Activities And Food Preparation, Tonia Carlene Mckenzie

The purpose of the project was two-fold. First, it was developed to teach first grade children the importance of learning to read as a functional necessity. The second purpose was to develop methods of doing this while simultaneously reinforcing several beginning reading and comprehension skills in a motivational way. Both purposes are addressed in a syllabus for first grade teachers that outlines how to use food-related experiences to supplement a beginning reading program.

A Teacher’S Guide To Develop Strategies To Teach Vocabulary Meaning In Social Studies, Jennifer Helen Kyllo

A vocabulary enrichment supplement to social studies for use at the sixth grade was developed. The guide included thirty-two vocabulary activities of various strategies to further enhance the social studies program. The activities developed use strategies from context clues, cloze, categorization, conceptual development, dictionary, thesaurus, vocabulary cards, and review. Student involvement was emphasized throughout the guide.

Remediating Spelling With Calligraphic Skills, Evelyn A. Heflen

In an effort to provide the remedial spelling student with visual-tactile-kinesthetic input, a model of spelling instruction which uses calligraphic equipment and skills was devised. Results from a pretest-posttest control group design revealed supportive evidence for the model.

Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.

Computerized instruction has captured the interest of many educators as a means of individualizing language study for their students. The quality of this individualization is maximally dependent on the degree to which a computer can understand what the student communicates to it usually by typing a message on the keyboard. This article provides an overview of this student communication, or input: its types, its recognition, and some uses of its recognition. The goal of this thesis was to present a teaching method which would demonstrate increased visual awareness in general education college students. The particular approach presented for that purpose was also designed to be of potential benefit to students' total educational experience. This paper is an individual case study of language acquisition. It is my intent to report the facts as they happened. The subject is my six-year-old stepdaughter, Gretchen, an energetic little girl who in the space of a year and a half achieved near-native proficiency in Spanish. She never attended one formal language class.

I have discovered through this study that dual cultural awareness through language allows for greater creativity within the individual and provides additional opportunity for personal growth and cognitive development. The Cloze Procedure: A Measure Of Reading Comprehension Ability, Theresa Lorene Donaldson

The present study was conducted in order to determine if a relationship exists between those comprehension processes measured by the Paragraph Comprehension subtest of the McGraw-Hill Basic Skills System Reading Test and the cloze test developed for this project. Two classes of undergraduate education majors enrolled in “Foundations of Performance-Based Education” were administered both the cloze test and the multiple choice comprehension test.

A correlation coefficient was computed between the summary scores on the McGraw-Hill and the summary scores on the cloze test. The results yielded a correlation of .021. These results did not support the research hypothesis.

The Effect Of Graphic And Phonemic Similarity On Syntactic Acceptability, Barbara D. Barket

The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of graphic and phonemic similarity on syntactic acceptability. Ten third graders were audio-taped reading material new to them at the end of the 1982-1983 school year. The children were given no assistance. Substitution miscues were recorded and analyzed according to The Goodman Taxonomy of Reading Miscues. Statistical analyses were carried out using the chi-square procedure and contingency coefficients were computed. The results indicate that graphic and phonemic similarity are somewhat related to syntactic acceptability but the relationship is very slight. Graphic similarity appears to be more independent of syntactic …
