Researchers have recognized that respondents may not answer items in a way that accurately reflects their attitude or trait level being measured. The resulting response data that deviates from what would be expected has been shown to have significant effects on the psychometric properties of a scale and analytical results. However, many studies that have investigated the detection of aberrant data and its effects have done so using dominance item response theory (IRT) models.
