Education Of Mathematically Talented Students In Hungary, Julianna Connelly Stockton

Hungary is famous for its production of large numbers of highly talented mathematicians and physicists. This study explores the Hungarian system for educating mathematically talented secondary school students with the goal of identifying successful features that may be applicable to education in the United States. Highlights of the Hungarian approach include an emphasis on problem solving, problem posing, detailed explanation or proof for solutions, and development of mathematical creativity through the search for multiple solution paths.

Hollywood films provide a rich and engaging means for teaching students about psychological topics. The Hours is an especially noteworthy film because of the wide range of psychological issues touched upon, including mental illness, gender roles, families, chronic illness, bereavement, caregiving, sexuality, and sexual orientation. Analysis of the film in this paper provides instructors of courses in psychology, social work, nursing, medicine, women's studies, and related courses, with suggestions for how this compelling film can help students develop in their understanding of human psychology. D.I.S.C.O.V.E.R. the Future with Robotics, a state-funded grant that aims to foster collaboration between students from urban and suburban schools, is being conducted by Sacred Heart University’s Isabelle Farrington School of Education professors Maria Lizano-DiMare, Ed.D., and Antoinette Bruciati, Ph.D., in conjunction with educators from the Hall School and Region 16’s Laurel Ledge and Community schools. In creative partnerships, students designed, built and programmed their own working robots. Canada is characterised by a large geographic area, rugged terrain, and many rural communities whose schools cannot offer the same educational opportunities as their urban counterparts. The province of British Columbia exemplifi es this situation. Since 1919, British Columbia has embraced open and distance learning to provide education opportunities across the vast province. British Columbia now has over 50 public and independent (i.e., private) schools offering distributed learning to almost 60,000 students in primary and secondary education.

To assist in the training and professional development of faculty new to teaching online, Sacred Heart University established the Digital Learning Faculty Certificate Program. This 8-week online cohort program provides faculty with best practices for teaching online, including instructional design, effective online communication and appropriate use of technological tools. Now in its third year, the Digital Learning Faculty Certificate Program has been successful in providing a mechanism to prepare faculty to better meet the challenges of teaching online.

Context: One of the most common instructional methods utilized in allied health and medical education to promote learning transfer is examination of a single patient case. However, in non-healthcare settings this practice has shown to be less effective in promoting learning than examination of multiple cases with cueing. Objectives: To examine the extent of learning transfer of cued versus non-cued pre-professional healthcare undergraduates engaged in a case-based analogical reasoning exercise and to determine what factors may explain variance in transfer outcomes.
