It is the purpose of this study (1) to evaluate the results of certain standardized achievement tests given in the Selah, Washington school system; and (2) to attempt to explain why this school district consistently produced a pattern of relatively low achievement in the area of language usage.

This study records the way two classes of freshmen at Granger High School were taught English composition. The method used may be termed a laboratory one since the writing of composition was done in a laboratory situation. The general features of the method included writing once a week, self-appraisal, group instruction, and independent practice on specific needs.
