Executive Summary: Information for this report was obtained from the Student Tracking System. The report presents information intended to provide insight into various characteristics of the 2073 graduates who matriculated during the 1991-92 academic year, 58.6% of whom were female and 41.4% male. Natives (students who began their education at WWU as first-time freshmen) made up 45.6% of the 1992 graduates, and transfers 51.6%. Most graduates were between the ages of twenty-one to twenty-four years old (61.9%). There were no graduates younger than twenty-one years old; the oldest graduate was fifty-nine. Current Washington residents made up 95.7% of 1992 graduates. …

Patron Objections To Library Materials: A Survey Of Christian College Libraries Part I, Craighton Hippenhammer
Faculty Scholarship – Library Science
A survey of conservative Christian college libraries in the United States and Canada was taken early in 1993 to determine how their librarians handle patron objections to their collections. Surveyed were their policies and procedures, the nature of their support for the Library Bill of Rights, the nature of challenges (84 percent reported students were the objectors), selection of controversial materials, intellectual freedom definitions and level of librarian education. Having a reconsideration policy is shown to be crucial for addressing censorship attempts.

Reinventing The University: Finding The Place For Basic Writers, Jane E. Hindman
Reinventing The University: Finding The Place For Basic Writers, Jane E. Hindman
Publications and Research
A poststructuralist critique of basic writing placement and pedagogy, this paper argues that our notions of good writing (i.e., the criteria by which we as English professors and compositionists authorize and "place" students) come not from some general or transcendent standards, but rather from the practices by which we self-authorize within our own discourse community. Using Bartholomae and Petrosky's curriculum presented in Facts, Artifacts, Counterfacts as a point of departure, I propose a language-centered curriculum which uses discourse itself as the subject of the semester-Jong project wherein students eventually learn to critique our practices and create their own discourse communities. …

The Cooperative Institutional Research Program (Cirp) Survey Of Western Washington University Freshmen For The 1992 In-Coming Class, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble, Jacqueline M. Andrieu-Parker
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Executive Summary: The following report provides written and tabular summaries of student responses to the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Student Information Survey for Western Washington University's 1992 in-coming freshmen class. The CIRP Survey is used nationwide to gather normative data on the characteristics, attitudes, values, educational achievements, and future goals of in-coming freshmen, and has been used at WWU since 1971. Currently, the CIRP is administered to WWU freshmen annually. The 1992 CIRP was administered to freshmen only a few months after the highly publicized Rodney King verdict, and certain responses reflected concerns with racial issues. For instance, the …

Executive Summary: Fostering the success of students of color and students admitted academically at risk has become an important goal for many institutions of higher education. In order to increase the success of these special student populations, some researchers believe that universities must be proactive in their efforts to help students. In fact, studies indicate that proactive programs are crucial, for it is often the students who need help the most that tend not to seek it. Numerous programs have been implemented to encourage increased academic achievement and retention among minority students and students admitted at higher risk of academic …

The Evolving Character Of Wwu Freshmen: Analyses Of Cirp Surveys From 1971 To 1991, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble, Jacqueline M. Andrieu-Parker
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Executive Summary: Since 1971, Western Washington University has utilized the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Student Information Survey to profile the characteristics, attitudes, values, educational achievements, and future goals of its incoming freshmen. Between 1971 and 1991 there were six administrations of the CIRP. This report uses those findings to examine the changes in WWU's in-coming freshmen over that twenty-year period. Raw data is also presented: that for the overall population in Appendix B, and by gender in Appendix C. Because of the large accumulation of data, while trends of significance were highlighted in the report, they may not constitute …

Executive Summary: Repeated studies in recent years, both at Western and elsewhere, have found students less satisfied with advising services than with instruction or various university services. For example, 77% of recent Western alumni are "very" or "mostly" satisfied with the undergraduate courses they took at Western, while 41% are similarly satisfied with the academic advising they received from all sources at Western. Satisfaction with advising received from faculty and major departments was lower than satisfaction with advising from the Academic Advising Center. Because of the concerns these studies raise, Western's Academic Advising Center requested that our 1992 alumni survey …

Institutional Assessment At Western Washington University For The 1991-1993 Biennium: Final Report, April 30, 1993, Joseph E. Trimble
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
The following report is a final summary of Western Washington University's institutional assessment plan for the 1991-1993 biennium. The projects and activities listed on the separate sheets are completed or are very near completion. In addition, many of the office's activities and projects are on-going and continuous. It should be pointed out that results from some of Western's Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing's (OIAT's) projects stimulated ideas that led to follow-up research and evaluation; therefore, the OIAT continues to expect some of its anticipated findings to lead to additional research which will become pan of the plan in the …

Curriculum-Based Measurement
This volume in the Buros-Nebraska Series on Measurement and Testing provides current information on the development and implementation of curriculum-based measurement. As the title of the volume suggests, effective measurement of children's classroom achievement is not a new problem. Curriculum-based measurement provides an interesting and useful alternative to traditional strategies for assessing academic performance.
This volume continues the tradition of including papers given at the annual Buros-Nebraska Symposium on Testing and Measurement as well as additional contributions selected especially for this book. Each of our authors has made significant contributions to the research that has been produced in the area …

3. Enhancing Instructional Programming And Student Achievement With Curriculum-Based Measurement, Lynn S. Fuchs
Curriculum-Based Measurement
Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is a form of curriculum-based assessment. As such, CBM has three features in common with all curriculum-based assessment approaches (Tucker, 1987): Test stimuli are drawn from the student's curriculum; assessment is ongoing and repeated across time; and assessment data are used to formulate instructional decisions.
Despite these similarities to other forms of curriculum-based assessment, CBM is distinctive because of two important features: It measures student proficiency across the annual curriculum and relics on standardized, prescriptive measurement methods (Fuchs & Dena, in press). The first purpose of this chapter is to explain these two features of CBM, by …
