Ability Of The Urban Teacher Selection Interview To Identify Teachers Who Are Likely To Be Retained In The Buffalo Public Schools, Patricia Frey
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The rate of teacher turnover appears to be higher than employee turnover in many other occupations. What is currently perceived as a teacher shortage may in reality be a problem of teacher retention. This study examined the use of the Urban Teacher Selection Interview, developed by Martin Haberman, Ph.D., as a tool for choosing teachers for urban districts. Almost 36% of those teachers eligible for employment in Buffalo refused employment. This compares favorably with a national average of 40% of teachers who choose not to teach. In general, the higher the interview scores the longer a teacher was retained in …
Technology Education And Integrated Learning For Adult Learners, Karen K. Lawson
Technology Education And Integrated Learning For Adult Learners, Karen K. Lawson
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
Adult learning and achievement in technology education can be enhanced through the process of integrated learning, rather than through learning skills in isolation. An integrated learning program helps provide the opportunity for instructors to help their students make connections and form relationships across the boundaries of classroom, discipline, skill, and background. Situated cognition refers to the idea that cognitive processes (including thinking and learning) are located in physical and social contexts. By providing technology education using information contexts (histories, stories, explanations, backgrounds), adult learners can draw on both what they have learned in life and are learning in the classroom.

Students in large schools are getting lost. In a school of over 2300 students, it is very easy for a student, who does not excel academically or athletically or those students who gain attention through negative behavior, to blend into the student body for four years without being noticed. Across the nation the move to create smaller learning communities has been an attempt to solve the ills that plague our inner city schools. The intended question of this study is whether or not the smaller learning communities will have the same measurable impact in a suburban district.
