A Comparative Analysis Of The Role Of The Academic Department Chairperson, Stanley Lawrence Coleman

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of collective bargaining and the incumbent's bargaining unit affiliation on the role of the academic department chairperson.

A questionnaire, designed to measure perceptions of the chairperson's role, was administered to a sample of 148 chairpersons from 10 mid-sized public institutions. Using the data contained in the returned questionnaires, comparisons were made between chairpersons' responses--grouped according to their inclusion in or exclusion from their faculties' collective bargaining unit affiliation on three aspects of the chairperson's role. Leadership Styles In Educational Leader Positions: An Investigation Of Some Common Factors In Socialization And Employment Environment Conditions, Gerald E. Lohr

This study examined the leadership styles exhibited by Michigan school superintendents in relation to school district size, birth order, family size, marital status, time served as a teacher before becoming a superintendent, and time served as a superintendent. The subject population consisted of 530 superintendents from which 363 were selected at random. A questionnaire was sent to the random sample with a 65% return. The questionnaire utilized the LBDQ FORM-XII to ascertain the self-perceived leadership styles of these superintendents. The aforementioned other sociological factors were determined by question. The purpose of this report is to describe a six week internship completed in the St. Joseph Public School System. The intern worked in the area of curriculum and personnel and became familiar with the role of Director of Curriculum and Personnel. Several major tasks related to that role were completed during the internship.

Chapter I contains a brief description of St. Joseph Public Schools. The chapter includes the intern's prospectus, including a description of the internship. The chapter also contains the intern's projected nature of internship experience.

The purpose of this study was to determine the nature of the relationship between treatment team interpersonal communication and staff to client relationships in a residential treatment setting. Through the use of the Staff Environmental Survey and the Youth Environmental Survey, questions pertaining to treatment team interpersonal communication were correlated to questions pertaining to staff to client relationships.

The subjects utilized for the study were the staff and clients of The Starr Commonwealth Schools' residential treatment program located in Albion, Michigan.

The literature demonstrates that the dramatic growth in school district size and the increased technical complexity within which school systems must now operate have forced local boards of education into dependence relationships with their key administrative personnel. Consequently, school business officials were thought to be in a position to exercise considerable influence in the decision-making processes of their boards of education because of the technical aspects and uncertainties associated with the responsibilities of that particular role function. In order to examine the relationship, if any, between an organization's structure and the propensity of that organization to support communication training for its employees, 16 small manufacturing firms located in southwestern Michigan were selected for study. Firms were determined to exhibit organic, mechanistic or mixed structures based on managers' perceptions of centralization, formalization, impersonalization and task specialization within the company. Each firm was also judged to exist in either an uncertain or stable environment. This paper describes an internship which was completed in the Admissions office of a community college in Michigan. A rationale for the internship is presented in Chapter I. An outline of the prospectus objectives is also included in the first chapter. Chapter II describes the experiences encountered during the internship. Administrative experiences with the associate dean of students are related, as are those involved in the accomplishment of two special projects. The purpose of this study was to compare the socialization process, educational backgrounds, and career commitments of women in educational leader positions with women in education who had not attained leader positions. The possibility that differences exist in those areas that have set some women apart and have resulted in their pursuit and attainment of administrative positions was explored.

An internship is reported and analyzed with regard to the consulting skills used by the intern during her work with the personnel of a hospital training and development department.

When the intern saw problems of an educational nature in department programs, she attempted to intervene to help department personnel solve these problems. Specific incidents are reported.

The reported incidents are then analyzed in terms of the consulting stages and modes used by the intern during her interventions. The primary purpose of this study was to examine different methods of assessing the training needs of community education directors.

Twelve major skill areas used by community education directors were synthesized from the literature and served as a basis for developing the survey instrument. This instrument was used to measure the perceptions of the 12 skill areas by each of the four groups in the study.
