Louisiana has a financial literacy problem. In 2016, 2018, and 2019, the Louisiana legislature responded to the financial illiteracy plaguing Louisiana by mandating personal financial management education. Though now required, no studies to date have examined if or to what extent personal financial management is being implemented across Louisiana.
Using a quantitative, non-experimental survey approach, I gathered and analyzed baseline data about Louisiana’s statewide implementation of personal financial management mandates in K-12 classrooms. Singing Their Stories: A Musical Narrative Of Teaching And Testing, Desi Richter

This musical, arts-based educational research describes the lived experiences of four K-12 New Orleans educators who believe that end-of-year standardized tests hinder their ability to teach in ways they believe are best. Using songwriting as a form of data elicitation and narrative restorying, this study documents the lived experiences of teachers who have experienced test-related cognitive dissonance. While curricular narrowing and other test-related practices have been studied in many contexts, the perspectives of New Orleans teachers are barely documented. Increased metacognition, social-emotional growth, and career viability are all researched benefits of including the arts as part of core content instruction, with even greater impact for struggling students, English Language Learners, and students with special needs. Despite a century of educational reforms, no matter how achievement is measured, learning and opportunity gaps can still be predicted by race and socioeconomic status. Teachers and schools are blamed for functioning to reproduce social inequality. This study investigated teacher agency and transformative potentials. It considered how teachers modified their pedagogical practices when teaching low-income and high-poverty students. In order to capture teacher beliefs and logic, a qualitative approach was used involving in-depth interviews of a small number of participants.
