Differences In Bachelors Degree Attainment: Are College Degrees A Function Of Habitus?, Colin S. Mccaleb Dec 2007

Differences In Bachelors Degree Attainment: Are College Degrees A Function Of Habitus?, Colin S. Mccaleb

Dissertations

This study sought evidence that Pierre Bourdieu's habitus influences college graduation and college transferring patterns. Hypothesizing that low socio-economic students have to change their habitus in the elitist environment of higher education, two research questions were advanced to explore this phenomenon, the first asking if there was evidence consistent with the idea that habitus influenced graduation rates, the second question asking if there was evidence consistent with the idea that habitus influenced transferring patterns. Under each research question, several hypotheses were tested using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, Chi square tests of independence, and logistic regressions. Income and civic participation …

The study provided for a clearer understanding of the impact of late registration on community college retention and student persistence. Of particular interest were the results of the examination of the course-specific side of late registration. The most significant findings of this study were: (1) Students who registered and began a course on time had a greater likelihood to successfully complete the course. The consequences students associated with late registration included missing critical first class day information and feeling rushed and unprepared to begin the class; (2) A majority of late registrants were successful in the late registered course, and …

This project reviewed the Academic Deficiency Report System at Greenfield Community College and identified flaws in the process that did not serve the students well. Based on the author's research of early warning models in the literature and best practices across the state of Massachusetts, an Early Progress Report and notification process was developed. Community College Partnerships With Business And Industry, Maryann Sharpley Lavendar Jun 2007

Community College Partnerships With Business And Industry, Maryann Sharpley Lavendar

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe, analyze and interpret the expectations and outcomes of industry partnerships with community colleges to determine their value, emerging themes that have contributed to their success or demise, and whether the goals initially set forth in establishing these partnerships was achieved. This study is based upon resource dependency theory, which proposed that if government and state funding given in support of community college education was diminishing, then the need is to better understand the value of and how community college and industry partnerships are working toward continuation. Resource dependency theory revolves around the …

During the forty-three (43) years since 1964, when the Commission of Professors of Adult Education (CPAE) was established, adult education scholars around the globe have achievements in the Field of Adult Education. Some of these findings have developed into trends which had special significance for a historic occasion of the Commission on international Adult Education (CIAE) Pre-Conference of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) Conference which included adult educators from various countries around the world in late 2006. These trends emerged during the opening years of the twenty-first (21st) century. A few of these trends are presented …

Grocery Store Politics: Leading The Rural Community College, Pamela L. Eddy Jan 2007

Grocery Store Politics: Leading The Rural Community College, Pamela L. Eddy

Articles

Rural America is characterized by decreasing populations, increasing poverty, limited economic growth, and limited access to cultural events. The context of the rural environment makes leading colleges in these locations different than in larger, more urban regions. The research reported here investigated the experience of rural community college leaders to determine more about the phenomenon of how they constructed their leadership given their rural context. Findings indicate less anonymity for rural community college leaders, a reliance on relationship building to accomplish goals, and a smaller local peer network to aid in reflecting upon the duties of the president.

Additions Toward A Thorough Understanding Of The International Foundations Of Andragogy In Hrd & Adult Education, John A. Henschke Edd

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

More than 225 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy are presented here, in order to provide a clear and understandable, international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory and practice of andragogy and its application to Adult Education and Human Resource Development. Six themes have emerged that provide a foundation for the linkage. The evolution of the term: historical antecedents shaping the concept; comparison of American and European understanding; popularizing and sustaining the American and world-wide concept; practical applications; and theory, research, and definition.

Illinois Public Community College Department Chair Roles And Role Conflict, Kristine M. Young Jan 2007

Illinois Public Community College Department Chair Roles And Role Conflict, Kristine M. Young

Vice President for Academic Services Scholarship

This research had two purposes: to determine community college department chair roles and to determine whether role conflict exists for the status of Illinois public community college department chair. The research was divided into two phases. In Phase I, community college department chair role factors were determined. Using ratings of importance reported by a sample of Illinois public community college department chairs on a modified version of Carroll and Gmelch’s (1992) department chair duty questionnaire, principal components analysis was employed to determine an underlying factor structure. Five factors were determined and interpreted as department chair roles: Department Leader, Resource Manager, …

The Influence Of Organizational And Governance Structures On The Frequency Of Management Skill Utilization Of Community College Chief Executive Officers In The United States, Timothy R. Oxley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Community colleges are purported to be in the midst of a leadership crisis due to the impending retirements of chief executive officers (CEOs) and senior administrators over the next several years. Concurrently, the demands upon CEOs to effectively and efficiently manage their institutions are more critical now in an effort to balance the demands placed upon them by public policy and institutional stakeholders. The purpose of this research was to examine the influence of institutional context, governance and organizational structures, on the frequency with which CEOs utilized certain management skills. The study population was community college CEOs as identified by …

Intimate Partner Violence Among Male And Female U.S. Community College Students, Shakiera Benson Jan 2007

Intimate Partner Violence Among Male And Female U.S. Community College Students, Shakiera Benson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Intimate partner violence affects a significant portion of college-aged individuals, but researchers know little about how the intersection of age, race, class, and gender influence intimate partner violence among community college students in the United States. In this quantitative correlational study, I examined the relationship between intimate partner violence and gender, race, age, class, marital status, and past abuse among community college students using the intersectionality theory. I used the Abusive Behavior Inventory and a demographic survey to collect data via a convenience sample of the target population of men (n = 220) and women (n = 330) attending a …

Accountability, Equity, And Practitioner Learning And Change, Estela M. Bensimon, Rueda Robert, Alicia Dowd, Frank Harris Dec 2006

Accountability, Equity, And Practitioner Learning And Change, Estela M. Bensimon, Rueda Robert, Alicia Dowd, Frank Harris

Frank Harris III

Accountability and evidence-based decision-making have become the mantra of government polilcymakers, and even private foundations. Yet most attempts to foster cultures of evidence have not brought about change in Practices, notably because they are treated as management tools rather than learning processes. Equity for All is an approach to accountability that is grounded on the principles of practice theory and sociocultural theories of learning. The authors provide empirical evidence to illustrate practitioner learning.

The effectiveness of this process and its potential impact are also discussed.

Using Emerging Technologies To Serve The Underserved, Andree Robinson-Neal Dec 2006

Using Emerging Technologies To Serve The Underserved, Andree Robinson-Neal

Andree Robinson-Neal

Community colleges in America developed out of a need to fill the gap between high school or technical education and university-level study. The two-year postsecondary experience which is typically offered at locations that are “community friendly” has attracted persons of color and those with more conservative economic means in ever-increasing numbers. Historically, these marginalized populations have experienced educational inequalities in larger numbers than other groups. As statistics show increasing enrollments from members of these groups, community colleges must provide and improve services that appropriately address both student need and societal demand. Students who are able to successfully obtain transfer to …
