Postpartum Pains, Lakea Youngblood
Postpartum Pains, Lakea Youngblood
Capstones
The Academy once again came under fire. This time for banning a commercial that advertised a postpartum support. People all over the country became enraged. The Academy seemed more friendly to movies about murder than postpartum, in alignment with the sexist ideas that have been pervasive in this country since its foundations. This short documentary pushes back against this narrative and the silence around postpartum by showing the realities of it through a woman’s journey.
The film is a personal documentary about myself. After having my first child, I found myself traumatized and scarred by the pains of postpartum. Because …

Political Scientist Christina Rivers: Restoring The Fundamental Right To Vote, University Marketing And Communications, Christina Rivers
DePaul Download
A democracy that’s truly representative of the people depends on the people to exercise their right to vote. There are some groups of people, however, who regularly don’t vote—because they don’t know they’re eligible. Contrary to popular belief, in Illinois, a convicted felon regains eligibility to vote as soon as he or she leaves a corrections facility. Anyone awaiting trial in jail is eligible to vote, too. DePaul political scientist Christina Rivers, an expert in voting rights and a DePaul Presidential Fellow, helped pass legislation to provide voter education to soon-to-be released inmates. In this episode, she discusses these initiatives, …

DePaul Download
Thousands across the globe—from Singapore to Croatia—will sleep outside on Dec. 7 in solidarity with and in support of people experiencing homelessness. In Chicago, DePaul’s Institute of Global Homelessness is hosting the World’s Big Sleep Out on the Lincoln Park Campus. It’s one of IGH’s many initiatives to help end street homelessness around the world. In this episode, Lydia Stazen, executive director of IGH, joins DePaul’s president, Dr. Gabriel Esteban, in conversation about the Big Sleep Out, IGH’s place at DePaul, and IGH’s plans to turn the energy and momentum of Big Sleep Out into long-term, meaningful action.

The doctoral advisor, typically the principal investigator (PI), is often characterized as a singular or primary mentor who guides students using a cognitive apprenticeship model. Alternatively, the cascading mentorship model describes the members of laboratories or research groups receiving mentorship from more senior laboratory members and providing it to more junior members (i.e., PIs mentor postdocs, postdocs mentor senior graduate students, senior students mentor junior students, etc.). Here we show that PIs laboratory and mentoring activities do not significantly predict students skill development trajectories, but the engagement of postdocs and senior graduate students in laboratory interactions do. We found that …

The Research Files Episode 39: Early Career Teacher Attrition, Jo Earp, Paul R. Weldon
Dr Paul Weldon
In Australia scholarly articles and media reports regularly state that between 30 and 50 per cent of teachers leave the profession within the first five years. But, where do those figures come from and how accurate are they? A study published in the Australian Journal of Education suggests there is no robust Australian evidence and data.

How can closure activities end my lessons with a lasting impression? Natasha Yates, St. Catherine University20-Minute Mentor SessionYou will take away many quick and easy closure strategies for your lessons from this session. Lectures or class meetings that just end do not leave lasting impressions as well as classes with closure. Closure or the wrap up of a lesson helps students recognize, summarize, acknowledge, and synthesize what they just learned. As education reformer John Dewey is credited for stating, “We do not learn from an experience. We learn from reflecting on an experience.” Closure strategies for a lesson are just …

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)
Prospective students across Illinois work excessively towards the achievement of getting accepted to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Though the selection process of applicants is meant to be fair and only admit the most qualified students, it has been found that this process has its flaws. While GPA and SAT scores are factored into these decisions, additional factors such as geographic, gender, and ethnic criteria are involved. Measures such as Affirmative Action are put into place to ensure each student has a fair opportunity to education. However, one result of IMSA’s attempt to comply with its statutory requirement to …
Investigating The Effects Of Student Debt On Career Outcomes: An Empirical Approach, Gideon Moore
Investigating The Effects Of Student Debt On Career Outcomes: An Empirical Approach, Gideon Moore
Honors Projects
High student debt has been hypothesized to affect career choice, causing students to desire stable, high paying jobs. To test this hypothesis, I rely on plausibly exogenous variation in debt due to a federal policy shift. In the summer of 2007, the Higher Education Reconciliation Act (or HERA) expanded the cap for federally subsidized student loans. I examine how variation in debt affects career choice and eventual salary of students using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 Child and Young Adult Cohort of students who were of college age during the implementation of the policy. I find …
