School Size And Curriculum Provision In Years 11 And 12, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

Do large secondary schools provide more comprehensive curricula in Years 11 and 12 than small schools? Is there an enrolment point beyond which the curriculum advantages of size are no longer evident? This paper examines these questions by drawing on preliminary results from a study of curriculum provision and resource use that is being conducted in conjunction with the University of New England. The study, which was funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC), uses data on the operations of four Australian government school systems in 1990. This particular paper focuses on Victorian schools. The paper has four main sections: …

What Does It Mean To Think, Learn, Teach?, Dorothy Bowen, Earle Bowen Dec 1991

What Does It Mean To Think, Learn, Teach?, Dorothy Bowen, Earle Bowen

Dorothy N. Bowen

How is the missionary force for the twenty-first Century to be trained? This is the challenge that emerges from this provocative book as it focuses on the task of effective missionary training. Western missions have tended to place most of their training emphasis on schooling and formal education-- witness the number of Bible schools, Christian colleges and theological seminaries that offer everything from a B.A. to a Ph. D. in missions/missiology. But the training concerns expressed by non-Western leaders from Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, the South Pacific, and the Middle East offer an alternative. While not dismissing the …

Progress Through High School: A Study Of Senior Secondary Schooling In New South Wales, John Ainley, Michael Sheret Dec 1991

Progress Through High School: A Study Of Senior Secondary Schooling In New South Wales, John Ainley, Michael Sheret

Dr John Ainley

In the 20 years from 1971 to 1990 the percentage of each cohort of young people completing secondary education to Year 12 has more than doubled. Most of that growth in the retention of young people into the postcompulsory years of school has taken place since 1983. In a short space of time postcompulsory schooling has changed from minority to majority participation. Changes such as these have impelled a consideration of how best to respond to the interests and aptitudes of the increasingly diverse population of students and how to encourage further increases in levels of participation. These issues are …

Educational Research In Australia, David Boud, Millicent Poole, Richard Warry, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

This review of educational research in Australia was stimulated by the Australian Research Council which convened a meeting of representatives of major stakeholders in educational research in December 1990. That meeting established terms of reference for the Review, appointed a review panel to take responsibility for the detailed work and continued itself as a reference group. More than 120 written submissions were received in response to circulation of the Terms of Reference. An interim report was drafted by the panel in consultation with the reference group and circulated widely for comment in early 1992. Seventy-six written responses were received and …
