Meeting The Challenges Of Short Response Items In The Queensland Core Skills Test: A Report On The 1991 Pilot Study, Gabrielle Matters
Dr Gabrielle Matters
This report describes the experiences of the Board of Senior Secondary School Studies in implementing a subtest consisting of test items in short response mode in the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test. Following initial developmental stages, the Board conducted a pilot study of short response items (SRIs) in 1991. This report describes the processes by which SRIs were created and refined. It also discusses how the items to be included in the pilot test were selected, sequenced and presented in the final paper. Details are provided on the administration of the test on a trial population outside of Queensland, and …

Gender, Race And Class Equity Issues In The University Curriculum., Sheldon Rothman, P Nightingale
Dr Sheldon Rothman
This paper discusses the first stage of the Curriculum/Equity Project, via the University of New South Wales. The project is examining the university curriculum in commerce, mathematics, science and engineering to see if students are disadvantaged because of their gender, race or class, and to suggest appropriate curriculum revision to increase the success and improve the university's retention of women, Aborigines, and other students from traditionally underrepresented groups.

Assessing Achievement In Australian Schools, Geoff Masters
Assessing Achievement In Australian Schools, Geoff Masters
Prof Geoff Masters AO
This paper considers the educational and technical feasibility of introducing a comprehensive system of student performance measures which will allow valid and reliable national and international comparisons. The conclusion reached is that a useful system of student performance measures can be established in this country, and some specific recommendations are made for the implementation of such a system. But the discussion that follows also contains important caveats and warnings. Difficulties in establishing valid and reliable measures of student achievement are not to be underestimated. Many education systems, particularly large systems in Europe and the United States which have had performance …
Factors Influencing Reading Achievement At The 14-Year-Old Level In 15 Educational Systems, Petra Lietz
Factors Influencing Reading Achievement At The 14-Year-Old Level In 15 Educational Systems, Petra Lietz
Dr Petra Lietz
This thesis investigates student factors influencing reading achievement at the 14 year old level in a cross national comparison of 15 educational systems. It involves secondary analyses of data collected in the 1970-71 Reading Comprehension Study, which was undertaken by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. The previous research into student background factors influencing reading achievement beyond the initial stages of schooling is reviewed and the research questions are operationalised. This is followed by a description of the data set employed to investigate the research questions. The underlying conceptual framework from which a model of individual student …

Telling The Whole Story : Assessing Achievement In English, Marion Meiers, R Mcgregor

The development of literacy is a responsibility shared by all teachers, in all curriculum areas. This book focuses on the development and achievement of competency in English, across all years of schooling. Part 1 offers a rationale for a responsive approach to assessment in English. A range of contexts representing the kinds of classroom experiences which promote the development of language competency and where students show significant signs of becoming effective makers and users of language is described. The third chapter describes the planning and management of an active learning context in one English classroom. Part 2 looks specifically at …

Australian Teachers' Careers, Rupert Maclean, Phil Mckenzie
Dr Phillip McKenzie
Teaching is an occupation that currently faces many difficulties. There is widespread concern among teachers about their occupational status, the demands of being a teacher, and the career rewards that teaching provides. The condition of teaching and the teaching service are also matters of intense public debate. This book contributes to this debate through a comprehensive examination of Australian teachers' careers. It discusses: the sociological, economic and historical contexts of teaching as an occupation; emerging issues and problems with regard to women teachers' careers, the ageing of the teaching force, teaching in rural schools, careers in Catholic and independent schools, …
