The rising cost of textbooks is often a barrier to students' ability to access their required learning materials and fully participating in their courses and succeed in their studies. This presentation gives an overview of why Open Education Resources (OER) should be used and what OER are. Further, it presents national research on the effectiveness and perceptions of OER as compared to textbooks by John Hilton and then shares data from the Spring 2019 Report on Affordable Learning Georgia. Adapting an existing introductory biology course to make it interdisciplinary and successful is an interesting experience and process. With imperatives such as lecture and lab components, a dense curriculum, preexisting learning outcomes and students with different levels of interest, adding material to provide relevant context show how both scientific and social knowledge relate to broader aspects of the human experience, can be challenging.
