The majority of male students enter the University of Tennessee with similar ACT scores and high school grade point averages. However, they are being retained at significantly lower rates when compared to their female counterparts. The discrepancy is even more pronounced among African-American males. As a result a male student committee was established in spring 2012 identify barriers and make recommendations to the Undergraduate Student Task Force for Student Success. GSWS 422 “History of Sexuality” has been offered for four years in the online summer program at the University of Pennsylvania. The instructor leads advanced undergraduate and graduate students through a highly interactive seminar class in which they learn how to analyze critically works in the history of sexuality, exploring sexual identities, roles and norms from Ancient Greece and Rome, to the United States in the 21st century. The skill of question formulation can lead to improved learning outcomes, greater student engagement, and more ownership of the learning process. This session presents the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) and guides teachers through strategies for integrating it into their classroom practice. Using the QFT helps students think more critically and independently by asking and evaluating their own questions - whether elementary level, secondary, or beyond. Participants are encouraged to attend the session with an upcoming project or activity in mind. You'll leave with a plan of action!

For the past few years, a federal grant sponsored by the Department of Justice has allowed teams consisting of faculty (from two-year and four-year colleges) and practitioners to assess the training curricula of various United States law enforcement and correctional agencies. Although traditional wisdom in academia is against viewing training academy courses as academically credible, the teams, after carefully assessing many training curricula, have agreed to give academic credit recommendation to those deserving curricula.
