The USF Tampa Library has been creating learning objects to enhance instruction and reference since YouTube came into its own in 2006. Over that period of time, the need for more expertise in creating quality learning objects that can be embedded in course management systems or on the library web site created a shift in priorities and leadership. In 2012 the USF Library hired an Assistant Director for Instruction and a Blended Librarian to provide a new direction for the instruction program, one that would include more online learning components. This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does impact how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must deeply engage in discussions on literacy and how information is tied to knowledge that does not limit learners to the Western worldview. Information Literacy will always be an abstract term until integrated into knowledge production.

From Active Learning To Activity: Getting Beyond Busy Work And Into Deep Learning, Wendy Holliday

This session will report on an ethnographic study of an English composition class. The researcher observed the class for an entire semester and conducted focus groups and interviews with students and the instructor. The session will describe key activities from the class, including reflections on motivation and learning by both instructors and students. It will conclude with a discussion of how the research findings can help librarians design instruction that engages learners more deeply.

South Africa has undergone major changes in the school curriculum. At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. This is also reflected in initial teacher training which has moved Information Literacy to a skill of the teacher, rather than an essential part of the curriculum that they have to teach.
