The rising cost of textbooks is often a barrier to students' ability to access their required learning materials and fully participating in their courses and succeed in their studies. This presentation gives an overview of why Open Education Resources (OER) should be used and what OER are. Further, it presents national research on the effectiveness and perceptions of OER as compared to textbooks by John Hilton and then shares data from the Spring 2019 Report on Affordable Learning Georgia. Educators are amongst a population at risk for exposure to secondary trauma because they have contact with young adults who may have or currently experiencing hardships such as mental health issues, relationship abuse, or financial insecurity. However, despite the vulnerability of educators to secondary trauma, little research has focused on this population or preventative techniques that might mitigate the effects of secondary trauma to educators. Since 2014 a linked-courses learning community has been offered for first-year students in selected majors in the School of Computing (SoC). The students selected for the community are from underrepresented populations in computing, and one of the purposes of the community is to build a sense of belonging among participants as this is connected to retention. This presentation was part of my unpublished research experience in a CTLE Faculty Learning Community (FLC) during the 2017-2018 academic year. It involved incorporating meteorological sensors in Unmanned Aerial Systems (or UAS) in the pedagogical context of meteorology courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Prescott, AZ. The FLC planned the incorporation of UAS sensors and working with the subsequent recorded data into courses during the Fall 2017 semester, implemented the planning during the Spring 2018 semester, and concretely planned to continue similar data gathering activities in future iterations of the courses.

Although the term “social justice” itself is commonly attributed to a 19th century Catholic theologian, the concept of social justice and imperatives to work toward its realization are integral to virtually all religious and spiritual traditions. Religious traditions have historically shaped institutions and power relationships in profound ways and continue to do so alongside the rise of the “nones” (those with no religious affiliation). Moreover, the complex interplay between religious and other cultural, racial, ethnic, lingual, political, and economic forces render a critical social analysis that leaves out religious factors woefully incomplete. What is vicarious trauma?  Vicarious trauma is a response to the continued exposure to secondary traumatic content (Figely, 2002). The difference between burnout or compassion fatigue is they can be addressed with time off or rest; however, vicarious trauma needs to be handled through coping skills and stress management.  If not addressed, vicarious trauma can have adverse impacts to a person’s cognition, self-perception, and empathetic engagement (McCann & Pearlman, 1990). Additionally, vicarious negatively impacts job satisfaction. The results of the study found for every increase in vicarious trauma, there was a decrease in job satisfaction. What if patron questions like, “How do I download an eBook?” could be answered by a slick two-minute video that any library using the same eBook platform could embed at the point-of-need? With an eye towards design thinking, performance support, instructional design, creative collaboration, and technology wrangling, these are the questions that we’ll address in this active discussion. Together, we’ll envision what instructional content could best be shared among Oregon libraries and how point-of-need resources could support library patrons at all different types of libraries.

When students role-play, their learning is personalized (Joyce & Calhoun, 2014). Add the challenge of finding compatible partners, and students are fully engaged as they infer the connections between themselves and their “dates”. Mix in the final element of limiting the opportunity to interact with potentially compatible partners, and students must quickly determine importance, synthesize, and then verbalize the details of their personas. Additionally, students must analyze their partner’s message to identify connections to their own, infer hidden identities, and describe their cognitive processes. This session focuses on digital collections at the University of Dayton Libraries and how it has evolved from using a stand-alone digital asset management system (CONTENTdm) to a flexible, robust, open-access institutional repository solution hosted by Berkley Electronic Press (Bepress). We share our trials and errors from our first digitization initiatives that began in 2006, to the launch of our first digital collection using CONTENTdm in 2010, to the implementation of our IR, eCommons, in 2013.
