Education delivery models and approaches are undergoing radical change. The traditional knowledge exchange model whereby an educator imparts knowledge to students may not be best placed to develop essential skills for the 21st century (Griffin, McGaw, & Care, 2012) and is being challenged by models that encourage knowledge creation by students. Using a wiki to facilitate group work may provide students opportunities for collaborative learning (Blumenfeld, Marx, Soloway, & Krajcik, 1996), knowledge sharing and construction (Elgort, Smith, & Toland, 2008), and skill development. The Value Of Academic Group Work: An Examination Of Faculty And Student Perceptions, Joanne P. Labeouf, John C. Griffith, Marian C. Schultz

This research examined student and instructor perceptions on group work requirements in academic coursework. Results for 330 faculty and 1,589 students were examined. The study found that most faculty believed group work had academic value, had practical work applications and group project grades reflected individual contributions. Most faculty disagreed that all students working on a group project received the same grade regardless of effort; however the majority of students expressed the opposite view.
