Research Themes In Hpt: A Content Review Of The Ispi Journals, Linda Huglin

Linda Huglin

To best understand where a field is going, it is important first to know where it has been. This article provides an overview of where the field of human performance technology (HPT) came from, what themes and trends have occurred in the ISPI literature since the field's beginning in 1962 through the present, and what gaps are apparent in the HPT research.

Hpt Roots And Branches: Analyzing Over 45 Years Of The Field’S Own Citations. Part 1: Journal Citations, Linda Huglin

Linda Huglin

This article is the first of a series of three that reviews the citation patterns of references cited in the entire collection of International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) journal articles (1962–2007) and all chapters published in the three editions of Handbook of Human Performance Technology (1992, 1999, and 2006). It includes an analysis of journal articles cited and lists which journals and particular articles are cited most frequently, both overall and by decade. Part 2 in this series will present an analysis of books cited in the entire ISPI literature collection, and part 3 will report on the most …

Primary Sources Of Cognate Research In Human Performance Technology, Liz Johnsen, Linda Huglin, Anthony Marker

Linda Huglin

This article is third in a series written to address questions regarding the need for more empirical research in the field of human performance technology (HPT) and the need to determine the future direction of HPT research. The call for more empirical research has been published in journals such as Performance Improvement Quarterly and Performance Improvement (formerly Performance and Instruction) for nearly 20 years.

In 2002, James Klein published a study based on a content analysis of research articles in PIQ from 1997 through 2000. That study was aimed at determining how much empirical research was being reported in HPT and what the focus of that research was. Klein found that only about one third of the articles published in PIQ represented empirical research. The current study replicates Klein's research for the years of 2001 through 2005. Results indicate that there has been a significant increase in empirical research published in PIQ in the last five years with empirical research now accounting for more …

This article is the second in a series of three that reviews the citation patterns of references cited in the collection of the International Society for Performance Improvement literature (journal articles from 1962–2007 and chapters in all three human performance technology handbooks). An analysis of books and book chapters cited is included, as well as a list of what books and book chapters are cited most frequently. Part 3 will report on the most cited authors, by decade, overall, and by type of reference.

Hpt Roots And Branches: Analyzing Over 45 Years Of The Field’S Own Citations. Part 3: Author Citations, Linda Huglin

Linda Huglin

This is the third and final article in a series of three that reviews the citation patterns of references cited in the entire collection of International Society for Performance Improvement journal articles (1962–2007) and all chapters published in the three human performance technology handbooks (Pershing, 2006; Stolovitch & Keeps, 1992, 1999). The first article (Huglin, 2009a) reported on the journal articles cited most frequently in this collection; the second article (Huglin, 2009b) provided an analysis of books and book chapters cited, including which books are cited most frequently, both overall and by decade. Research Priorities In Performance Technology: A Delphi Study, Linda Huglin, Liz Johnsen, Anthony Marker Sep 2011

Research Priorities In Performance Technology: A Delphi Study, Linda Huglin, Liz Johnsen, Anthony Marker

Linda Huglin

Although a great deal has been written about the need for more research in the HPT field, specific research questions have not recently been identified. This study used a three-round Delphi approach to identify research questions of interest to experts in the field, resulting in 100 questions that were classified under ten categories. Participants prioritized the research categories and rated each question as to its importance to the field. Summary statistics for all categories and questions are presented.
