The overwhelming majority of published scholarship on urban high schools in the United States focuses on problems of inadequacy, instability, underperformance, and violence. Similarly, across all schooling contexts, most of what has been written about young men of color continually reinforces deficit narratives about their educational possibility. Taken together, images of Black and Latino male students in inner-city schools often manufacture dark, hopeless visualizations of imperiled youth and educational environments. Using photographic data from a study of 325 college-bound juniors and seniors attending 40 public New York City high schools, this article counterbalances one-sided mischaracterizations of young men of color …

Abstract of Study This Participatory Action Research (PAR) Project examines effects of parental/teacher collaboration on parental participation. The study incorporated surveys, interviews, blogs, and focus groups from parents in Miami. This data brought forth important aspects of collaboration parents deemed important. We used data to create workshop style meetings to address these deficits.

Education for African Americans has historically been linked to the broad movement to improve their lot in life. Ceaselessly, from slavery and Jim Crow, toward full membership in American society, schooling was as much about academic learning as it was for ensuring the sustainability of the community in which the school was situated. The idea that changing the formal structure of governance can lead to better schools is rooted in American political and intellectual history. Politicians, career educators, parents, business leaders, and investors continue to wrangle over the control of public schools all across the country. While scholarship on educational change has long accepted that disruptions to the status quo are an essential part of the change process, disruption has never been more central to planned change than it is in the current political context in the USA, where legislation has mandated school closure, reconstitution, and turnaround as required remedies for schools failing to produce annual student achievement gains required by government. In this paper, we explore the concept of adult education and lifelong learning in the Latin America and Caribbean region and situate it within the context of the CONFINTEA V, Agenda for Adult Education which was more recently reaffirmed by CONFINTEA VI. The first section provides a contextual discussion of how adult education and lifelong learning are conceptualized in the region while the second discusses the region’s response to the agenda for adult education. The third segment highlights some of the associated challenges and concludes with implications for adult educators.

The purpose of the study was to find out factors affecting active community participation in adult literacy and non-formal education programmes in Anambra state. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The design was descriptive involving 475 respondents selected from participants in the UNICEF assisted adult literacy and non formal education programme through disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using a 27 item questionnaire. Mean scores were used in answering the research questions, while t-test was used in testing the hypothesis at 0.5 level of significance. This article reports findings to promote the best practices of a transformative teaching and learning environment from a case study of a year long, full immersion Secondary Level Professional Development School. The results support the idea that interns have a significant stake, active professional community commitment and a heightened awareness during their training and prior to employment. As a result of the full immersion PDS experience, there is a significant transformational impact in their personal and professional grounding as future career educators. Best practices for the promotion of authentic teacher preparation are discussed.

Participatory decision-making and teachers’ morale are positively and significantly correlated in public secondary schools in Zamboanga City, Philippines. Public secondary school teachers in Zamboanga City have High Morale in their work performance as teachers. This is evident in decision-making processes and activities regarding high school students with disciplinary problems, selection of the honor students, planning of the yearly In-Service Training for Teachers (INSET), preparation of the calendar of activities and conduct of remedial classes for slow learners.

This study sought to develop and validate a Physical Education Achievement Test (PEAT) which will be used for accurate assessment of adult learners in basic education. Eight items were developed and pilot tested. Validation and reliability were determined using Kuder-Richardson formula ‘21’. Based on the results some recommendations were made.

This was with the view to determining how income-generating activities have helped adult women to develop skills in their different vocations and how these programmes have made participants to become self-reliant and improved their standard of living. This study focused on the necessity of constructing and using standardized achievement instrument for assessing adult learners. Tests and other procedures for measuring learners’ progress serve as basis for instructional decisions taken by educators on learners. For this reasons, educators are supposed to be versed on the production of good quality tests in order to obtain true estimates of learners’ achievement. This study discussed the qualities which a good test should have namely; validity, reliability and usability.
