John Evans Study Report
With the completion of this report the University of Denver is presented with an opportunity to reflect on our institutional origins, history, and legacy. We have an opportunity to provide a model of transparency, accountability, and transformation for institutions that have directly profited or indirectly benefited from the displacement of the indigenous communities whose lands and histories they occupy. This moment invites us to bend the arc of history away from the clamor of old apologetics that have caused deep wounds for those whose voices have been silenced and toward justice, healing, and peace. This likewise holds for those whose …

John Evans Study Report
"Universities are dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge. They are conservators of humanity's past. They cherish their own pasts, honoring forbears with statues and portraits and in the names of buildings. To study or teach at a [university] is to be a member of a community that exists across time, a participant in a procession that began centuries ago and that will continue long after we are gone. If an institution professing these principles cannot squarely face its own history, it is hard to imagine how any other institution, let alone our nation, might do so."

Case Study Two: Jewish Time Jump: New York, Owen Gottlieb

Gottlieb presents an early case study of his mobile augmented reality game Jewish Time Jump: New York design on the ARIS platform for the iPhone and iPad (iOS). The game is set on-location in Washington Square Park in New York city. Players in 5th-7th grade take on the role of time-traveling reporters, landing on site on the eve of the Uprising of 20,000, the largest women-led strike in U.S. History. Based on their GPS location they receive media from over 100 years in the past, interactive with digital characters as they work to gather a story for the fictional Jewish …

History Abroad: How Do Denmark And The U.S. Measure Up?, Louis T. Gentilucci
Student Publications
By viewing bias itself as a product of history, educators and scholars can understand it better in their own times. By studying the historical path of the United States and Denmark, scholars can see that the nature of history can have subtle but important impacts on common education. Even when educators are aware of potential bias, history itself warps its dissemination.

Teaching Literature In America: Demonstrating Relevance In The Early Cold War 1945-1963, Jennifer Chalmers
Honors College
This historical research focuses on how literature was taught in American high schools in the early Cold War period (1945-1963) and why it was taught that way. It aims to discover how the Cold War culture of conformity impacted secondary literature education. What were literature teachers’ concerns? What was the historical context of these concerns, and how did they affect methods in the classroom and rhetoric in academic journals? Finally, how did methodology and rhetoric change over time? Research involved gaining familiarity with Early Cold War culture, politics, and events through secondary sources; narrowing to U.S. education in the early …

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
How many times have you heard someone remark that everyone seems to have ADHD or ADD? According to the American Psychiatric Association, 5 percent of children are diagnosed with ADHD (sometimes called ADD), and according to the National Institutes of Health, 4.1 percent of adults have the disorder. Perhaps it’s true that our fast paced society and the abundance of technology and electronic stimuli have impacted the attention span of many youth and adults, but even so, Attention Deficit is a valid disorder that significantly impacts the individuals who are diagnosed with it. There is a difference between being occasionally …

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Students with disabilities must be able to access course materials in an equally effective manner. Designing course materials with accessibility in mind allows the University to meet its obligations to students with disabilities.
When making decisions about course accessibility, please consider a variety of aspects of instruction, including selecting accessible texts and other readings (don’t forget Web-based content such as documents and other files), and ensuring that any videos posted online are captioned. These are just some of the important aspects of creating a course that is inclusive to all students.
Examining The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Children’S Literature, Lauren Hunt
Examining The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Children’S Literature, Lauren Hunt
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this research, I evaluated the historical representation of Native Americans in children’s literature. The portrayal of Native Americans in children’s literature is important because Native Americans are commonly included within elementary school social studies curriculum. For this reason, teachers should know how the literature they select historically represents Native Americans. This historical representation includes—but is not limited to—their interactions with European explorers, colonists, and eventually Americans. Teachers must be aware that publishers of children’s books are businesses; their job is to sell books. As a result, these companies do not always ensure that the books they sell are historically …
