The need for childhood education was studied and, based upon experiences garnered as a Kindergarten teacher, Cub Club was created and implemented in order to begin to reduce the achievement gap. Students most at-risk for academic failure are the populations of students classified as English Language Learners; migrant students; special education students; children of poverty; homeless students; students in foster care; children of abuse or neglect; and children with social, emotional, or behavioral concerns. The number of students falling within the at-risk population of students has continued to increase over the years. With the belief that fertile ground for a literate environment is created through lots of oral language, ancestral anecdotes, and reading a variety of genre in fiction and nonfiction, it is possible to link home and school literacy communities. This chapter describes the connection between district literacy events and functional home activities as the basis for a partnership in developing higher level thinking that transcends the classroom. The obesity rates among children in the United States have been rising rapidly over the past thirty years. Children are getting messages from the media to eat unhealthy foods. This epidemic is beginning to be addressed in schools. A nutrition curriculum was developed and implemented in a half day kindergarten program. Core academic subject were integrated using Washington State GLEs as a guide. Parent involvement was a component to strengthen student's understanding of cultural diversity as it pertained to food.

The studied focused on the communication between parents, teachers and students and the student self-reflection of strengths, weaknesses, and goals during Student Led Conferencing. Twenty-five students in a sixth grade classroom created student led conference portfolios and participated in fall and spring conferences with their teacher and parents. The specific parts of each of the pieces of the portfolio and conferences are examined. The results showed a highly effective rate in the desired areas.

This paper is an in-depth look at the experimentation with and use of written feedback with middle school foreign language students and their parents. It includes my own learning about giving written feedback, the process by which I have trained my students to give written feedback, and finally the extensions of written feedback beyond the classroom, to the parents. The home language acquisition skills notebook was developed to aid parents in giving appropriate language stimulation and activities for their child's level of development, four to six years of age. In addition, positive home teaching techniques, positive home language hints, and a mini-language library bibliography are also available to guide the parent in appropriate home language intervention. Although the notebook will be used with language delayed children first, it is designed to be used with all children in the Lake Chelan Elementary Kindergarten in an attempt to stimulate better language skills, both receptive and expressive.

Realizing that the parents play an important role in the counseling program, the primary purpose of this study was to prove that parents and students feel the counseling program provides an opportunity for parents to understand the abilities and needs of their youngsters and to share in their educational planning. It is contended that no matter what limitations the student may have, it is possible through parent-counselor conferences to better understand his needs. Then the home and school can work together in establishing a more satisfying environment.
