Creative exercises (CEs) are a form of assessment in which students are given a prompt and asked to write down as many distinct, correct, and relevant facts about the prompt as they can. Students receive credit for each fact that they include that is related to the prompt and distinct from the other facts they list. With CEs, students have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and the opportunity to select the information that they believe is related to the prompt. Helping Students With Cross-Cultural Communication: An Experiential Activity, C. Fender, Jane Murray

This presentation details an activity that can be utilized to assist students understand and experience the issues surrounding cross-cultural business communications. Student groups are set the task of constructing short (5-10) minute role-plays to illustrate cultural communication styles and values. Groups are assigned two different cultures to research, with the role-play focused on an initial business meeting between individuals from those cultures. Role-plays are then "acted out" in a class fishbowl, with observers identifying specific cultural features of the communication. The activity's design allows it to be easily tailored to varying class sizes, or incorporated into assessment pieces and examinations.

Purpose

This study examined Christian graduate students’ perceptions of integration of faith and learning (IFL) in an instructional context where intentional integrative strategies were used to enable IFL for students.

Method

This study used a case study design that relied primarily on qualitative sources. The case investigated included 28 graduate education students in a summer “institute” at a Christian university. The instructors and most students were of the same denomination that the university is affiliated with. Most students were experienced teachers and expressed strong personal faith. Students in Mexican schools with previous experience in US schools are transnational students. To the extent their Mexican schooling does not recognize or build on their US life and school experience and their American school experience did not anticipate their later relocation to Mexico, these students are incompletely attended to by school. Yet these students, like all students, are agentive and have some control over how they make sense of their schooling.
