Graduate instructors often dive into teaching without extensive preparation or a teaching certificate. However, some graduate instructors tutored in university writing centers prior to their graduate work. Tutoring prior to teaching allows the graduate instructor to gain confidence with introductory coursework, cope with silence from students, and learn how to ask students questions before they ever have to step foot in a classroom. The relationship tutors have with students differs from the relationship instructors have with students, which adds a complexity for graduate instructors who are accustomed to the tutoring relationship. This portfolio explores four aspects of the lecture and practicum that comprise the coursework for students learning to tutor children with reading and writing disabilities. The first aspect is the alignment of the course objectives, teaching methods, assessments and scores. The second aspect is innovation in curricula for tutoring, explored through student response to surveys at the end of the tutoring session. The third aspect is student experience of participating in the course at mid-point and suggestions for improvement of course delivery, gathered by a mid-semester survey. Reimagining Relationships Between High School And College In The Wonderful World Of Writing Centers, Tammy Conard-Salvo, Richard Severe, Bridget Carey, Collin Baker

This panel presentation given at the 2014 International Writing Centers Assocation (IWCA) conference shows two ways that high school and college writing centers can intersect. The first presentation describes a partnership between a college and high school to form a “sister writing center.” The second presentation addresses shifting tutor identities when high school tutors go onto college. Both presentations identify direct and indirect relationships between high school and college writing centers, and attendees will be invited to share ideas about collaborating with high schools.

Teacher discourse or teacher talk is the form of discourse that teachers use when instructing their students. Chaudron (1983) described teacher talk as a particular form of speech used by teachers to instruct their students through language that is clear and explicit. He compared teachers’ speech and native speakers’ speech to nonnative speakers in settings outside the classroom (also called foreigner talk), explaining that differences exist but are not sufficiently systematic or distinct to make teacher talk a ‘special sociolinguistic domain’ (Chaudron 1988: 55): ‘It appears that the adjustments in teacher speech to nonnativespeaking learners serve the temporary purpose of …
