The Banneker History Project (BHP) reconstructed the history of a local, segregated school. The Benjamin Banneker School served African American youth from 1913 to 1951. Oral histories from surviving alumni as well as primary documents from the times were sought. This article focuses on ways that one group of participants, 24 preservice teachers of color. experienced and interpreted the BHP. Data are reported in response to three questions: (a) Whose community does service learning serve? (b) What meanings do preservice teachers make of culturally responsive teaching? and (c) Does a community orientation count in teacher education? The author reflects on …

Teachers’ Experiences Of Learning Science: A Case Of Autobiographical Reflection, Nelofer Halai
Teachers’ Experiences Of Learning Science: A Case Of Autobiographical Reflection, Nelofer Halai
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
This paper analyzes the experience of learning science in school of 34 teachers enrolled in a science methods course in the M.Ed. programme offered by the Aga Khan University, Pakistan. The participants were expected to write their reflections after recalling their experience of learning science in school. The findings reveal that the majority of teachers recalled negative experiences of learning science and that the teaching style of their teachers influenced the way they feel about science even to this day. It follows that if teachers are helped to recall their own experience of learning science in the classroom, it opens …
Citizenship Education In Pakistani Schools: Problems And Possibilities, Bernadette L. Dean
Citizenship Education In Pakistani Schools: Problems And Possibilities, Bernadette L. Dean
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
A critical aspect of education that is often overlooked or inadequately addressed is the preparation of school students for citizenship. This paper assesses the current state of citizenship education in Pakistani schools. It draws on the findings of two research studies: an analysis of the social studies curriculum and textbooks and a review of teaching and learning practices in schools. The findings indicate that the curriculum and textbooks do not distinguish between Islamic education and citizenship education and promotes exclusionary and passive citizenship. They also shows that while Pakistani students acquire knowledge and learn some important values in schools, they …

The Residual Effect Of Novice Primary Teachers On Reading Achievement Scores, Connie Mayo
The Residual Effect Of Novice Primary Teachers On Reading Achievement Scores, Connie Mayo
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This dissertation was an exploratory investigation of the residual effect of novice primary teachers on reading achievement scores. The study employed the theory of pedagogical content knowledge as a basis for understanding teacher expertise and comparing the expert teacher to the novice teacher. The research sought to answer two major questions; (a) Is there a statistically significant difference between the reading achievement, (measured two years later) of students taught by teachers of differing experience levels in primary grades and the state mean for the appropriate grade level? and (b) Is there a statistically significant difference among the two-year-later reading achievement …

Determining Which Delivery Styles Are Best Suited For Instructing In The Distance Learning Environment, James T. Schultz, Marian C. Schultz, Thomas G. Henkel
Publications
The purpose of this study was to ascertain if there is a specific style of teaching which is better suited for the distance learning (virtual) environment, as opposed to the traditional classroom environment. Numerous studies have shown that individuals have different delivery styles in the classroom. The study utilized instructor delivery styles and faculty perceptions of distance learning programs to develop an instrument which identifies the style that would be more successful in the distance learning environment. The study employed an author developed instrument, which included a derivative of the Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI) instrument, to determine the teaching …

Multi-Party Mobilization For Adolescent Literacy In A Rural Area: A Case Study Of Policy Development And Collaboration, Edmund T. Hamann, Julie Meltzer
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Between 2001 and 2005, the state of Maine shifted the focus of its statewide high school improvement efforts to include an explicit focus on adolescent literacy. One trigger for that change in focus was a 5-school adolescent literacy initiative previously launched in a rural county under the federal Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory contract. This monograph describes the multi-party mobilization that led to the creation and implementation of the adolescent literacy project and explains the link between that modest rural effort and the change in state-level reform efforts. The project was designed and implemented at the intersection of what …

Systemic High School Reform In Two States: The Serendipity Of State-Level Action, Edmund T. Hamann
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Maine and Vermont have been national leaders in state-level coordination of high school reform. Both recently developed almost interchangeable, new, voluntary, statewide frameworks that describe multiple ways high schools should change. Both frameworks— Promising Futures (Maine Commission on Secondary Education 1998) and High Schools on the Move (Vermont High School Task Force 2001)—were published in book form and include extensive bibliographies grounding their claims that they are research based. Both frameworks recommend principles and practices for improving high schools for all students. Both frameworks were drafted primarily by leading local educators with only modest support from experts based beyond the …

Models For Computer Science K-12 Outreach Activities, Laurie Murphy, Tammy Vandegrift, Brad Richards, Brent Wilson
All Faculty Scholarship
It is widely known that our computer science students do not reflect the diversity of the population at large [1]. One method for encouraging broader participation in computer science is to design and deploy outreach activities targeted for K-12 students [2,3,4]. Goals for outreach activities are numerous: to provide a more accurate view of the computer science discipline, to increase students' confidence in their CS abilities, to provide opportunities for students to meet working professionals, and to counter negative stereotypes about the computing culture. Outreach activities can vary widely in terms of target audience, duration, and overall objective; therefore, it …

Teacher educators work with prospective and practicing teachers focusing on what it means to learn and teach. They confront what constitutes learning experiences in classrooms, pursuing the consequences for the nature of learners, learning, teachers, and teaching. Increasingly, in my work as a teacher educator I document consequences to the elemental nature of learning and teaching, such as neglecting the ethical realm of teaching …
