Teaching Self-Regulation To Sped Students: An Intervention, Kelsie Premer

This capstone project examined the impact of self-regulation and executive functioning skills of using a planner on eighth-grade students with missing assignments, who have mild to moderate learning disabilities, and other health impairments that impact their learning. Self-regulated learning strategies and executive skills, such as using a daily homework planner were explicitly taught during a five-lesson intervention to eight, eighth-grade Special Education (SPED) students during a Guided Study Hall class. This capstone reports the effectiveness of using differentiated instructional and assessment strategies to improve student performance in math. Based on pretest data, instruction was planned and implemented to best meet the needs of each student to help them succeed. This unit started with a pretest, had ten days of lessons and instruction, and then concluded with a post-test. Based on student data, student performance and learning increased by using differentiated instruction and instructional strategies that were adapted to help each student. It is evident that individuals within the education field maintain a high level of involvement and responsibility within their school role(s). However, the primary purpose of schooling is to provide a safe, welcoming environment for students to grow socially, emotionally, and academically. This requires teachers to create thoughtful, applicable lesson plans to encourage their students to succeed.
