This action research study focused on first-year teachers who were assigned to teach in grades 6-12 at a suburban school district and were involved in a mandated new teacher mentor program. The researcher evaluated participants’ self-efficacy using the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) and a series of qualitative questions to determine if a first-year teacher’s self-efficacy changes during the first semester of their mentorship experiences and if each domain of a first-year teacher’s self-efficacy (student engagement, instructional strategies, or classroom management) changes during the first semester of their mentorship experience. In response to the growing population of English language learners (ELLs) in a school district in rural Iowa, professional development (PD) has been developed as a school improvement plan to help teachers learn how to meet the needs of this population. This plan has been developed based on a robust review of current literature on strategies to support ELL students. The purpose of this action research study was to determine the effect that the combination of coaching and professional development have on teachers’ confidence levels and number of classroom practices carried out compared with teachers who only attend professional development. The participants included six female caucasian teachers who all teach preschool in public elementary schools in southern Iowa. The purpose of this action research project was to determine the correlation between teacher self-efficacy and engaging in a student-centered coaching cycle with an instructional coach. Data was collected through qualitative responses via an electronic self-efficacy survey from a sample group of four middle school teachers. Analysis of the data collected suggested that engaging with an instructional coach in a coaching cycle increases a teacher’s overall self-efficacy.

The purpose of this action research project was to determine if there is a correlation between the implementation of structures and processes for meaningful collaboration and the level of collective efficacy in a professional learning community. A combination of the level of trust among the team and the dedication and prioritization of time were critically considered over a period of nearly two months. Data was collected through quantitative surveys and qualitative observations. Analysis of the data collected suggests the fourth grade team's collective efficacy was strengthened as structures and processes for meaningful collaboration were implemented.
