The following paper is a description and analysis of a four-day teacher training workshop which took place in February and March of 1081 in Zacatecas, Mexico. It was designed to provide English teachers with the opportunity to experience various techniques that are currently used in teaching ESL. The design and implementation of the workshop are presented in detail. Several major issues which were brought out during the workshop process and became a significant part of the discussions will also be explored. Joint Tefl Training Of Peace Corps Volunteers And Host Country Nationals In Tongo: An Experience And Recommendations, Ruth A. Pierson

The author describes her experience as TEFL Coordinator for a Peace Corps training program for both Americans and Africans in Togo. The background of TEFL training in Togo is outlined. The organization of the training program is presented, along with problems encountered and recommendations for future training programs. The author also discusses the content of the training program in light of the rationale and goals of training, and shares some personal insights gained as a result of her expereince. Extensive appendices contain copies of the materials used during the training program.

The purpose of the workshop is to engage teachers and prospective teachers in the processes of self evaluation, goal formation and the development/application of more effective ways to teach. This report is a description of the creation and workings of an Open Corridor ESL Workshop designed as a supplement to an intensive ESL program. The workshop's form is based on the beliefs that learners learn in different ways, have different needs and interests which should be reflected in the content of activities, and can take the responsibility for their learning. An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of this workshop and recommendations for improvement and use in different situations are presented in the final section.

This project concerns itself with the Problems of English Teaching in Africa and suggestions toward improvement.

The writer, after three years' experience in American public schools, universities, and other educational programs, has come to realize that there is much to be done to improve teacher training methods and techniques in the teacher training colleges and in-service training of teachers in Africa. Workshop programs with new and developing materials of teaching and techniques are recommended as one solution to these deficiencies.
