Undoing Whiteness To Diversify Teacher Education And The Teaching Force, Rick Lybeck, Andrew P. Johnson, Maria-Renee Grigsby

Various initiatives are underway in Minnesota and around the country to promote racial consciousness in K-12 teaching (R4615). Some of these show great promise for helping to realize goals related to racial equity and social justice articulated by key professional organizations guiding teacher education and educational research nationwide (AACTE; AERA; AESA).

While enrollment statistics point to incremental gains being made toward diversifying the teaching force in Minnesota and nationwide, this pace lags behind the growth in diversity of the K-12 student population. At the same time, Minnesota’s teaching force remains over 90% white (MDE, 2020).

There are a number of barriers that faculty face when thinking about adopting textbook affordability measures. How can we, as librarians and instructional designers, help them take the first step quicker and easier? With this poster, I will share some of the strategies we have used at Minnesota State University, Mankato, including building anthologies of public domain documents, conducting a textbook analysis, and creating OpenStax course cartridges for D2L Brightspace.

This session will showcase a grant-funded multi-campus collaboration effort to provide OER professional development to faculty on four university campuses. An outline of the program, tools used to facilitate the administration of the program, outcomes, and lessons learned will be discussed. This study investigated how a Multi-Layered Autobiography Project impacts the intercultural competence for undergraduate students, many of whom were aspiring teacher candidates in the United States. For purposes of this project, the concept of “culture” was adapted from West and Turner’s (2018) definition: the norms, behaviors, standards, values, etc. shared by a group of people, and passed along to later generations.
