The idea of Big Ideas in mathematics education has now been around for a while, but what does it mean for the teaching and learning of mathematics in schools? This Digest attempts to address this issue by describing two views about Big Ideas, and aims to give some insights into how the Big Ideas concept can be used by mathematics teachers.

This edition of the Research Digest focuses primarily on parent-teacher collaboration, considering what research can tell us about:

  • why parental engagement is important
  • key features of effective collaborations
  • critical challenges and issues that teachers and parents may face
  • strategies that have helped teachers and parents build effective relationships

Some examples of activities undertaken as part of whole-school programs are also included. These illustrate the kind of scaffolding that helps teachers, parents and children establish the foundations for effective interactions.

A recent Australian review of numeracy teaching noted the significant role of language in mathematics learning. The National Numeracy Review Report (2008), commissioned by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), synthesised evidence on effective numeracy teaching to support the goal of improving numeracy outcomes for Australian students. The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians set out two broad goals, the second of which stated that by the end of secondary schooling: All young Australians become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens.
