Facing Publishing Paralysis In Teacher Education: Book Critique Of Writing Your Journal Article In Twelve Weeks (2nd Ed.), Donna Zerr, Carissa Gober, David Wolff

Essays in Education

Our lived experiences as Teacher Education faculty in the realm of scholarly writing was filled with anxiety and trepidation. In the attempt to develop as writers, we participated in a professional learning community book discussion on Wendy Laura Belcher’s workbook, Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks: A Guide to Academic Publishing Success (2nd ed.). The text’s exercises helped motivate our steps through the writing process and developed productive writing habits for publication. This article is a critique of the book which helped us face and overcome our fears of writing with the intention to publish academic scholarship. The workbook …

A View On Research In Mathematics Education In Republic Of Srpska During 2010–2015 Through Quantitative Analysis Of Published Texts, Ryan Nivens, Daniel Romano

ETSU Faculty Works

Studies of the publishing practices in mathematics education have situated sets of journals in tiers of quality. These reports document the rankings and prestige of only a subset of the wealth of journals available for publishing in mathematics education. We posit that there is value, quality, and purpose to be found in journals that present studies that are of value on a regional level, and that the studies are extremely important to the field. This is particularly important for journals published in languages other than English, and the studies referenced above are almost entirely English-language journals. In this paper we …

Reconciling Challenges And Opportunities In Academic Scientific Writing, Kamaruzaman Jusoff

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

To initiate the governmental strategy in Thrust 2 of the Ministry of Higher Education Strategic Plan Core Thrusts launched in 2007, and to nurture “First Class Mentality”, in the currently running Ninth Malaysia Plan (2005-2010); the need is vital for the educational sector to pick up the drive to manifest it. The second thrust emphasizes on the strategy to raise the capacity for knowledge and innovation. For that, it is apt that the academia contributes towards the effort to achieve excellence. In addition, its fourth thrust that is enhancement in teaching and learning; and the fifth thrust that is strengthening …

Working Together To Ease The Pressure To Publish In Higher Education, Barbara Burns Jan 2010

Working Together To Ease The Pressure To Publish In Higher Education, Barbara Burns

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Academics are under a great deal of pressure to publish. Decisions on crucial issues of hiring, tenure and promotion are largely determined by publication rates (Boice & Jones, 1984) and faculty scholarly performance has traditionally been assessed by “straight counts” of publications (Braxton & Del Favero, 2002). These publication rates are used by institutions as an indicator of the institution’s performance and are important criteria in securing external funding from government and other sources (McGrail, Rickard & Jones, 2006). Failure to publish within the expected norms established by a college or university can result in a faculty member’s termination.

Ethics In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen Nov 2009

Ethics In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

This presentation focuses on the following Robinson and Moulton quote found in the book "Ethical Problems in Higher Education": The myth that institutions of higher education are sheltered from the struggles and conflicts of the “real world” is widely accepted even by people who ought to know better—those of us in academic settings who confront, struggle with, bemoan, or try to ignore the serious ethical issues that arise. People outside academia may tease us about the ivory tower world and our innocence and naiveté. With a twinge of guilt, we in academia accept their teasing because the myth tells us …

Ethics In Publishing, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

The primary purpose of this innovative session is to provide HRD faculty, administrators, and graduate students the forum to listen to panelists and then discuss current issues and challenges related to the ethical decision-making and behavior of researchers and scholars as it relates to publishing. It will provide attendees the opportunity to challenge behaviors and practices commonly seen and held within this arena. I (Susan R. Madsen) just faciliated a very successful session at the Academy of Management in Anaheim (August, 2008) on this topic and realized that we need the same conversation (different panelists) in the AHRD. In fact, …

Ethics In Publishing: Professional Development Workshop, Susan R. Madsen, James Davis

Susan R. Madsen

This PDW is all about “The Questions We Ask?” In fact, it is also about “The Questions We Should Ask!” With the fairly recent and highly publicized breaches of ethics among members of the business community, there is a need to re-examine specific strategies employed in all kinds of organizations. Many business faculty are comfortable teaching ethics in the classroom, but are we (as scholars and educators) appropriately challenging our own ethical practices? Ethics in publishing is one of the areas that many disciplines have recently been addressing. This workshop will provide faculty, administrators, and doctoral students the forum to …

Tracking Faculty Research Productivity: Analysis Of A Survey Instrument, Jeffrey E. Hoyt, Susan R. Madsen, Scott C. Hammond, James W. Fenton

Susan R. Madsen

Research and publication is an inherent value at all institutions of higher education throughout the world. Regardless of the motivation, faculty research fulfills a vital need for new knowledge generation. The purpose of the current study was to pilot test a survey instrument to evaluate factors that have an affect on faculty research at one public comprehensive four-year institution. The Business School in cooperation with the Office of Institutional Research created an instrument to track changes in faculty motivation and research involvement over time, with an emphasis on submissions and publications as effective outcomes. The survey instrument consists of scales …

Going From Zero To Ninty In Faculty Research Productivity, Scott C. Hammond, Susan R. Madsen, James W. Fenton

I (Susan) am the chair of the Faculty Scholarship Committee in the School of Business and an assistant professor of management at Utah Valley State College. Scott is an active member of this committee (also an assistant professor of management) and Dr. Fenton is the Dean of the school. The three of us arrived at UVSC during the summer of 2002 and have (along with other committee members) worked hard to (1) analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate a variety of change interventions related to increasing faculty research and publication in our school and (2) facilitate change in the faculty …
