Abstract
This qualitative study sought to understand student beliefs and perceived levels of confidence in a primarily online professional doctoral degree in education. Before accessing course material and formal instruction, respondents assigned scores to a Likert-style survey and answered open-ended questions about their understanding of basic educational research methodology. The rise of distance education follows the rapid growth of technological advancement, yet, much is still unknown about pedagogical practices that contribute to improved learning outcomes for students in the virtual environment. This paper outlines the conceptual framework of an inclusion initiative for programs serving secondary students from economically challenged communities. It proposes the use of distance learning technologies to afford these students access to learning resources, experiences, and environments in STEM. This paper addresses concerns with a complex duality of environmental factors: the environments in which these students are reared and currently reside; and the alteration to the environments in which they “traditionally” learning. Using The 5e Instructional Model In An Online Environment With Pre-Service Special Education Teachers, Delinda Van Garderen, Mary Decker, Rachel Juergensen, Heba Abdelnaby

In this practitioner article, we describe the innovative way the 5E Instructional Model was used in an online, hybrid special education undergraduate course to prepare pre-service teachers to teach academic content to their students with disabilities. We provide a rationale for the use of the model in the course, describe how we implemented the model in the course, teachers’ perceptions about the model as a way to facilitate and model the process of learning for themselves and students, and discuss implications for practice.

Incorporating the element of care is important in creating a positive, online learning experience. This is even more true in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, and students are reporting increased feelings of stress and isolation. Combining the ideas of humanized online learning, social presence, and care can help instructors to foster and nurture online learning communities. The author attempts to simplify itemized strategies instructors can employ to form the mnemonic device “C.A.R.E.” which stands for: Connection, Attention, Respect, and Energy.

Given the current racial, economic, and socio-political tensions in K-12 education, the work of teacher preparation arguably has never been more important or difficult.
