Anomie, Aspirations, And Delinquency: Implications For Education, John R. Schuster

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The problem of this study is how can youth who have accepted deviant behavior as a pattern be identified. This study investigates relationships among anomie, aspirations, delinquency, and educational achievement, and it theorizes that students who are not anomic, hold high aspirations, and achieve normally in school will not exhibit deviant behavior as a pattern. The antithesis of the theoretical statement is also proposed.

Replication: A Teaching Technique And Its Impact On Student Open-Closedmindedness, Dale H. Decker May 1972

Replication: A Teaching Technique And Its Impact On Student Open-Closedmindedness, Dale H. Decker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem for the study was the lack of research on the effect of the empirical replication technique on student closed-mindedness. The replication technique requires the student to repeat, or replicate, studies originally conducted by social scientists. In this sense, replication is roughly analogous for the social sciences to what laboratory experiments are for the natural sciences. Additionally, the relationship between college student adjustment-maladjustment and open-closed-mindedness were explored while controlling for sex and academic achievement.

The control group (N=61) attended two lectures and a discussion section per week which dealt with introductory social science materials. The experimental group (N=85) was …

A Comparative Study Of The Relationship Of Self Concept To Achievement In Navajo And Anglo Children., Ronald L. Oldham May 1972

A Comparative Study Of The Relationship Of Self Concept To Achievement In Navajo And Anglo Children., Ronald L. Oldham

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This study was undertaken to develop an empirical basis for the comparison of Anglo and Navajo children in the relationship of their self concept to their academic achievement. There is much research dealing with the way Anglo children view themselves in their interaction with family, friends and the school program. It was felt that additional research was warranted to enable educators to compare more accurately the attitudes of ethnic groups in these areas and better understand the impact of the total school program on academic achievement.

An Alternative Analysis For The Situational Attitudes Scale, Charles G. Eberly

Charles G. Eberly

A re-analysis of the Situational Attitudes Scale (SAS) was conducted to investigate lts generality, validity and reliability and to suggest a more conservative method of analyzing the data. Three forms of the SAS were developed under the name Situational Attitude Inventory. Forms A and B corresponded to the originals; they tested attitudes toward whites and blacks, respectively, in varying social situations. Form c was developed to test the validity of the social situations for differentiation among alternative referents, which included welfare, age, ethnicity, and physical characteristics. The SAS was administered to a random sample of new freshman and transfer students …

A Comparison Of The Equalization Effects Of Federal And State Public School Fund Distributions In New Mexico, Jose A. Perea Feb 1972

A Comparison Of The Equalization Effects Of Federal And State Public School Fund Distributions In New Mexico, Jose A. Perea

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of the study was to measure the equalization effects of twenty selected New Mexico school fund distributions relative to the school districts' fiscal capacities.

An index of fiscal capacity was developed by dividing the assessed valuation of each school district by the 180 day average daily membership during two target years. The target years, 1968-69 and 1969-70, were selected because the state legislature changed the basic public school distribution formula from a "weighted pupil" index for 1968-69 to a "staffing" index for 1969-70.

The relationship between each of the distributions and the New Mexico Public School Fiscal Capacity …

A Program For The Training Of Elementary Art-Music Teachers, Edward A. Boynton Jan 1972

A Program For The Training Of Elementary Art-Music Teachers, Edward A. Boynton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The writer has had experience as a supervisor of music at the elementary and secondary levels. This experience combined with the development of courses to suit the program for an elementary teacher training institution provided the background for the development of this project.

The problem, as it appeared to the writer, was that in spite of valiant efforts on the part of music supervisors and art teachers’ elementary students did not comprehend music or art as an aesthetic whole. The methods in use, in most Maine schools, presented the arts as a technical skill to be mastered by the student …

Report On Faculty And Student Evaluation Of Instructors In Direct Service Teaching At Portland State University Graduate School Of Social Work, Janet Mansfield, James Mcdevitt

Dissertations and Theses

The classroom as a messenger of learning and awareness is an honored institution. Education promotes the spirit of inquiry. Concurrently, inquiry spearheads research. As students who have spent many hours in a classroom, we have wondered, inquired, into the spirit of the classroom. Our research is devoted to gaining and establishing a series of perspectives as to what occurs in the classroom.

Our research is concerned with specific characteristics of the teacher-learner relationship and outcomes of that relationship. Specific characteristics of the student-teacher relationship such as effective communication, clarity of course objectives, or the quality of class lectures, have been …

Identification Of Experiences In Applied Biological Science And Agribusiness Of Seventh Grade Students, Roy D. Dillon, University Of Nebraska W. Walker

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

In a study to identify the applied biological science-oriented experiences of seventh grade students and to describe student aspirations for future study of applied biological and agribusiness subjects, a random sample of 1,286 7th-grade students was selected in Nebraska. The sample represented l0.l% of the 7th-grade students in Nebraska in 1970, and was selected by drawing a 5% random sample of schools within each of 8 mutually-exclusive class groupings as defined by the Nebraska State Department of Education.

It is clearly evident from the results described that 7th-grade students in Nebraska have gained considerable exploratory experiences through formal and informal …
