The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the reading achievement of color blind children at the end of the first-grade in five randomly selected Albuquerque Public Elementary Schools to determine if there are any significant differences in their reading achievement and that of color vision children with similar I.Q. scores and to find if there is a relationship between this defect of vision and reading achievement.

The purpose of this investigation was (1) to survey the reading interests of eighty-three seventh grade students of both sexes at Jefferson Junior High School, Albuquerque, New Mexico; (2) to show the degree to which different levels of intelligence in the survey group produced differences in reading interests; and (3) to determine whether literature in the texts used by students in the survey group satisfies these interests.

Following World War Two, the United States and the Soviet Union became the chief rivals for world leadership. Because of this, communism replaced fascism as the totalitarian ideology of most concern to Americans. This new situation brought with it a series of problems for the public schools: Should secondary schools teach about communism? How should this topic be approached? What materials should be provided for use by high school students?

For a time, public hysteria prevented the logical resolution of these problems. George B. Bruntz describes this period in the following way:
