Theresa Stretch is a native of the State of Illinois. After working as a food service director in both rural and metropolitan districts in Illinois, Theresa accepted a position as an Education and Training Specialist at the Institute of Child Nutrition, where she has been for the past twenty years. Theresa will retire on March 31, 2020.

Using data from 21 Educare schools, the researchers measured the rate at which children from birth to kindergarten-age enter the school and rate at which they exit the school. Educare schools are highly resourced Early Head Start/Head Start programs targeting children at risk, especially children from low-income backgrounds. About 10% of the children have a disability. Results showed that children with a disability tended to stay in the program longer, especially when enrolled in Early Head Start.

A native Oxonian, Beth King has never lived anywhere else. King was educated in the Oxford, Mississippi, public schools before earning multiple bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and then taking a PhD from the University of Mississippi. She worked at the J.D. Williams Library for a number of years before being recruited to move to the National Food Service Management Institute, now the Institute of Child Nutrition, where she helped develop the Institute’s computer technology.

Whose Story Is It, Now? Re-Examining Women’S Visibility In 21st Century Secondary World History Textbooks, Erica M. Southworth, Jenna Kempen, Melonie Zielinski

In 2005 Clark, Ayton, Frechette, and Keller (2005) conducted a content analysis study on secondary world history textbooks to determine whether women’s inclusion had increased or decreased between 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s. They reported women’s severe marginalization in the texts even though the percentages of women’s inclusion had increased over the course of the decades. We conducted a replication study of the content analysis performed by Clark et al. from a feminist research lens and analyzed 2000 and 2010 editions of the same textbooks to determine if female inclusion had increased. Shirli Self is an Idaho native who has worked in school nutrition both in Idaho and Oregon, in a unique position. The area where she currently works in Oregon is so rural and remote that Oregon pays for her students to finish high school in Idaho after they complete eighth grade in Oregon, because the nearest Idaho high school is much closer than the nearest Oregon high school. She has twenty-one years of school nutrition experience and is a one-woman show, having no employees and being responsible for feeding ninety-three K – 8 students every day.

Public interest, research and policies about dual language education and the multiple benefits of bilingualism and biliteracy have led to shortages of bilingual education teachers in the state and nation. School districts and educator preparation programs are actively looking for pathways of bilingual teacher preparation to meet local demands for more dual language programs. Modeled after medical residencies, teacher residencies are deeply rooted in clinical training, typically placing residents in classrooms with experienced teachers in high-needs schools where they are supported in their development. Perry Fulton of Alabama worked for nearly forty years in multiple areas of child nutrition programs. He spent more than a decade at the district level before moving to the state, where he specialized in troubleshooting financial issues and getting districts back on track. Formative teaching observations by peer teaching faculty can provide helpful advice about small changes to teaching that can improve teachers’ and students’ experiences during the term (see reference list).
