A Reading Comprehension Guide Book For Upper Elementary School Students, Kaley Repp

This is an examination into the reading skills students need to help him/her comprehend reading. This project identifies 18 strategies students use when comprehending texts and then places those 18 strategies into a guide book. The 18 strategies are presented with lessons, teacher prompts, and literature for teachers to use with students who need additional reading support. This guide book has not been tested for effectiveness among elementary school students, however, the strategies are research based and have been identified as effective for student success in comprehension.

The focus of this project was to review the available research on using poetry as a method for teaching literary terms, enhancing comprehension, and developing creative writing skills. The results of the research show that there is a need for poetry instruction and that including this instruction in the middle school provides remarkable benefits for students. Poetry is suitable for the varying levels of ability found within the classroom. The project includes a guide providing teachers with activities to implement a poetry unit.

The purpose of the project was two-fold. First, it was developed to teach first grade children the importance of learning to read as a functional necessity. The second purpose was to develop methods of doing this while simultaneously reinforcing several beginning reading and comprehension skills in a motivational way. Both purposes are addressed in a syllabus for first grade teachers that outlines how to use food-related experiences to supplement a beginning reading program.

A series of 50 lessons were developed to transfer the reading skills of comprehension, context clues and study skills to their use in gaining information from the social studies textbook. The lessons were developed to be used in conjunction with the fourth grade social studies textbook, Environments, American Book Company. The purpose of this project was to develop a set of instructional materials that would provide classroom teachers with a motivational method for teaching the skill of following written directions. The set of 180 direction exercises provided practice in applying phonetic elements and structural analysis in the context of a reading activity. Comprehension skills were practiced through the development of key concepts, use of structural words, comparing and contrasting ideas, making appropriate judgments and teaching cognitive strategies. With daily use, the directions provided continuous practice in essential reading skills while eliciting observable consequent behaviors which implied language reception or comprehension.
