The Effects Of A Cognitive Stress Management Program On Perceptions Of Stress Levels, Sara Sue Schaeffer

The impact of a cognitively oriented stress management program on participants' perceptions of their stress levels was assessed utilizing a prepost test format with randomly selected experimental and control groups. Between the pre and post tests the experimental group experienced the stress management workshop which focused on four major components: becoming aware of stress and its effects, assessing personal responses to stress, learning effective coping strategies, and designing a personal stress management program. Two measurement instruments were utilized. The Stress Program Assessment Instrument (SPAI) measured participant's cognitive knowledge of stress and coping strategies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of whether interaction with a computer-assisted career information and guidance system is a function of the person's age, sex, or educational background. It further attempted to determine if there were differences in the career information needs of Macomb Community College students and those of the general Michigan Occupational Interest Survey (MOIS) user population of the Michigan Occupational Interest Coordinating Committee's study of 1980. Problem

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of Black freshmen and seniors toward counseling experiences at a historically Black urban university and at a historically White urban university.

Methodology

Four hundred and thirty-eight Black freshmen and seniors enrolled at a historically Black urban university and at a historically White urban university located in the Southeastern area of Texas during the spring session of the 1982-83 academic year constituted the available sample size from the identified population. Kindergarten through third grade classroom teachers need professional training on how to assist pupils coming from one-parent homes due to separation or divorce. The methods that are employed by kindergarten, first, second, and third grade classroom teachers were surveyed using a questionnaire specifically designed for the study. The results of the questionnaire were presented in tables, using the raw scores. The study concludes that teachers are willing to assist pupils in this trying situation, but they feel inadequate to do so. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of sixteen structured group sessions on black high school girls' attitudes toward the rights and sex roles of women, cognitions about the "ideal" woman, and expressed interests in careers in science and engineering.;The literature indicates that individuals select and enter career fields based partly upon their perceptions that certain career areas are more appropriate for one sex than for another. The Problem. The women's movement calls for social change and new options for women in society among these options are career options which women never had before. High school counselors make career suggestions for both male and female counselees. This study attempted to examine if these counselors who agreed with the aims of the women's movement would offer more non-traditional career options for both male and female twelfth grade counselees. The Type A behavior pattern, which has been linked to a high incidence of heart attack among adult males, has been the subject of much research by both medical and psychological professionals. There have been very few attempts to modify this damaging behavior pattern in individuals who have not shown any symptoms of heart disease. The problem of this study was to increase the general publics' awareness of the difficulties Black Americans faced in pursuit of higher education.

The procedure was a twofold process. First, the writer reviewed some of the pre-college variables that affected the Black student. Second, the needs and concerns of the Black student at a predominantly White University were studied by the use of a questionnaire.
