The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between inadequate academic advising and its effects on graduation rates, retention, and students’ academic performance. Mixed technology will be used to conduct a thorough investigation. Interviews of graduate students from a Student Affairs department at an east south-central 4-year institution will be used for the qualitative aspect of this study. The participants will discuss the advising encounters they shared with their undergraduate academic advisor(s). Student persistence to graduation is a salient issue in higher education, especially for at-risk groups. Varied approaches to increasing student success and engagement have been tried across campuses throughout North America. The following literature review will highlight evidence-based practices used to increase student persistence at varying levels of organizational structure, including university-level, program-level, and multi-systemic interventions. Recommendations for the specific context of Olivet Nazarene University will be made based on the findings of the included research.

All students are impacted by stress and can improve learning through understanding the brain and brain regulation. For students who have experienced trauma this information is critical to their success. This presentation will provide guidelines, ideas, and strategies for teaching students key trauma-informed principles including strategies for physical, emotional, and cortical regulation. These principles and strategies can be taught to students individually or through group and classroom settings. Practical ideas and examples will be given along with feedback and lessons learned from the students we have taught.

This program will tell the story about one school district's journey to meeting the needs of the whole child. A shift in school culture from a reactive to a proactive purpose shaped the mindset of staff as they embarked in partnering with the local community to build a resource network to meet the needs of the students in which they serve. In addition to building community partnerships, the components of a successful intervention continuum are discussed including Positive Behavior Intervention and Support, Community in Schools, and the American School Counseling Association Model.
