Fall Risk Prediction Model For Older Men And Women Based On Ambulatory Physical Activity Level – A Cross-Sectional Population-Based Study From The Oporto Region, Paulo Jorge Quintela Cardoso-Carmo, Adjane Maria Pontes César, Manuel Rubim Silva Santos, Maria Joana Mesquita Barbosa De Carvalho

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Introduction. Falls among the elderly are an important community health problem due to its high incidence, functional and social repercussion. Dissimilar results arose in recent studies concerning fall risk and physical activity levels. This study measures the association between physical activity (PA) levels, and fall risk (FR), investigates which levels of PA are influential in FR and presents a fall risk prediction models for the elderly. Material and Methods. One hundred and seventy elderly adults (72.34 ± 6.70 years old, 124 female), completed Performance-Orientated-Mobility-Assessment; PA was assessed by accelerometry. Pearson’s correlation verified the association between FR, Age, and PA. Multiple …

Children’S Segment Specific Moderate To Vigorous Physical Activity Through A School-Initiated Physical Activity Program, Arto Gråstén Mar 2022

Children’S Segment Specific Moderate To Vigorous Physical Activity Through A School-Initiated Physical Activity Program, Arto Gråstén

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: Since less than one-third of 13-year-olds in many Western countries meet the physical activity guidelines, there is a major need to promote physical activity. The aim of this study was to examine children’s segment specific moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) through the school-initiated program. Material/Methods: The sample comprised 76 Finnish elementary school children. Accelerometers were used to investigate the patterns of segmented MVPA through 2012-2014. Repeated Measures Analysis was implemented to summarize variability between time and segments of MVPA. Results: The examination of children’s MVPA revealed that their total, weekend, and before-school activity were significant predictors for their …

Comparing The Physical Activity Patterns Of 3-Year-Old Finnish And Australian Children During Childcare And Homecare Days, Anne Soini, Anthony Watt, Tuija Tammelin, Markus Soini, Arja Sääkslahti, Marita Poskiparta Mar 2022

Comparing The Physical Activity Patterns Of 3-Year-Old Finnish And Australian Children During Childcare And Homecare Days, Anne Soini, Anthony Watt, Tuija Tammelin, Markus Soini, Arja Sääkslahti, Marita Poskiparta

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: Limited previous research has contrasted physical activity (PA) patterns in preschool children across different hourly patterns or segments of day, or adopted similar methodologies to compare the PA behaviors of children from different countries. The purpose of this study was to examine how the PA levels and patterns differed between 3- year-olds within and between childcare and homecare days in Finland and Australia. Material/Methods: ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers were used to monitor 121 (80 Finnish, 41 Australian) children’s PA for five consecutive days. Results: No significant country differences were observed in children’s daily total PA (light-tovigorous PA [LMVPA]), except that …

Promotoras’ Current Lifestyle Behavior And The Influence On Body Composition And Physical Function, Dana Day, Sonio David Garcia, Alexis Ortiz, Aliyah Medina, Andrea Guerrero, Corina Zamora, Deborah Parra-Medina, Daniel Hughes Feb 2020

Promotoras’ Current Lifestyle Behavior And The Influence On Body Composition And Physical Function, Dana Day, Sonio David Garcia, Alexis Ortiz, Aliyah Medina, Andrea Guerrero, Corina Zamora, Deborah Parra-Medina, Daniel Hughes

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

PURPOSE: A significant public health problem is the increased quantity of time spent sedentary. Although promotoras, Spanish for community health workers, are being utilized to promote health behaviors along the South Texas-Mexico Rio Grande Valley (RGV) border region, Latinas are among the most physically inactive and obese segment of the US population. The purpose of this study was to identify the current lifestyle behaviors impact on body composition and physical functioning. METHODS: We conducted an analysis of the recorded body position (sitting, standing and recumbent) from an accelerometer versus the percentage of body fat and the estimated cardiorespiratory function …

Effects Of A Head Start Obesity Prevention Pilot On Preschoolers’ Physical Activity, Shiyu Li, Azeem A. Hussain, Fernando Juarez, Vanessa Estrada, Erica Sosa, Derek P. Hales, Zenong Yin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Regular participation in physical activity (PA) is important for the healthy growth and development of preschoolers. The Míranos! Look at Us We Are Healthy (Míranos!) is an obesity prevention intervention with age-appropriate structured and unstructured outdoor/indoor play and classroom activities led by teacher. As an objective instrument to provide information on human movements, accelerometer can accurately identify the levels of physical activity and assess the effects of physical activity intervention. PURPOSE: to evaluate the effects of an 8-week Míranos! pilot intervention on increasing physical activity levels during school time in preschoolers. METHODS: Study participants were children aged 3-5 years enrolled …

Gopher Fitstep Pro Accuracy When Measuring Steps And Moderate-To-Vigorous Physical Activity, Ali Brian, Justin A. Haegele Jan 2017

Gopher Fitstep Pro Accuracy When Measuring Steps And Moderate-To-Vigorous Physical Activity, Ali Brian, Justin A. Haegele

Human Movement Sciences & Special Education Faculty Publications

Background: The Gopher FITStep Pro (GFSP) is a commercially available objective physical activity monitor that records steps taken and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the GFSP for measuring steps taken in a guided walking condition and MVPA during planned fitness activities.

Method: University-aged participants (N = 35, Mage = 20) wore two GFSP (right and left side) pedometers and one ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometer during both conditions.

Results: Paired samples t-tests determined that self-step counts in the guided walking condition were not significantly different …
