The purpose of this paper is to show the uses of Assitive Technology (AT) as an educational tool, and to highlight a few devices that can be used in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Math for students with learning disabilities. Through the use of low-tech and high-tech devices, AT will be able to help students become better readers, writers, and mathematicians. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can range from mild to severe and can cause debilitating outcomes that require children to need specialized medical or educational services post-injury. Outcomes vary and are dependent on the location of injury, age, severity, and environmental factors. This study examined teacher characteristics and practices identified as effective through current research for teaching students with complex communication needs. For this population, communication issues are more complex than those typically encountered in other settings. Specifically, the researcher asked: what are the desired characteristics and practices for this population, and are the desired characteristics and practices present in current settings?
